Question About Changing Rear Fluid?

Recommended Posts

When I changed the rear dif fluid in my last truck I had a hard time finding a gasket so I just used sealant. Is that what you guys do or should I get a gasket. The local parts store said it was $50. A bit expensive if you ask me. Can I reuse the old one?

I was careful on my 07 and just opened the cover enough to let it drain and then reused the gasket. No leaks. But doesn t yours have a drain plug?? My 09 does.

use sealant.

I always use black RTV and I've never had an issue, just get the mating surfaces clean and don't go crazy over applying it.

Some use just RTV and some use a gasket. Both work well. Like stated above, don't overdo it on the sealant. Just enough to cover the area and seal.

i didnt look but dont think any 900s have drains. plus i like to clean the magnet and inspect the gears.

If you wish to use a gasket, get a Fel pro gasket. They aren't $50 more like $10 or so. The one you had quoted to you was the re-useable type

I did it on my GMT-800. Use a synthetic 75w-90, that's what the factory calls for. I just got a gasket at the dealership, it wasn't outrageous. I would recommend taking the cover all the way off. I couldn't believe the amount of goop on the magnet.
