Opinions Please... Nnbs ~ Bds

Hello, Newbie here..

I have some questions and need some opinions about the modifications I wish to perform on my (NNBS) 2007 1500 LT. It's a 4x4 standard cab short bed with the 5.3, automatic and towing package. Truck has auto 4x4.

I just purchased a BDS 6" lift and was wondering a few things.

1. Should I go with 35's or 33's? I don't want the stuffed look.

2. Will the 18x9 Moto Metal "MO951" wheels with 5.71 (+18mm) backspacing work on this truck? I don't wish to have the wheels hang out of the fenders more than say an inch and a half.

3. Will I be required to replace the gears or install some type of programmer?

4. Will the stock drive shaft be acceptable with the truck having auto 4x4?

5. Will the BDS lift allow for a level stance? Or do I need front spacers as well?

6. How can I find out what gears my truck has in it currently?

7. Does anyone have any pictures of a NNBS standard cab short bed with just a 6" lift?

Thanks for any input

1. Tire size is up to you. 35's don't look stuffed with 6" BDS imo.

2. Those wheels should be fine. I have 4.7 and mine stick out about 2.5 inches so you should be good.

3. If you have 3.73 gears and 4 speed you will want to change gears with 35's.

Programmer won't help your tranny but a tune will account for bigger tires.

4. No idea

5. Yes the BDS levels it out.

6. Not sure

7. I don't

The tire size is up to you. I think a legit 33x12.50 looks good with 6" of lift and it will minimize the need for trimming. However, 35's look great too but will require minor trimming. Those wheels are the perfect offset for your truck and gears are not necessary. They help but are not something you have to do. You will want to get a tune of some sort to correct for the new tire size, and you don't need to modify the drive shaft. The lift will allow for a level stance as it is and you can check the RPO codes in your glove box to find out what gears you have. You probably have 3.73's so I think you should see RPO GT4.

Truck was most likely built with 3:42 gears. 3:73's were an option only, in that year. Check the RPO codes. I'd put gears in it, if I was lifting it no matter the tire size used. RPO codes GU6 = 3:42 and GT4 = 3:73.

35's will require trimming where 33's will not, your choice.

I'd program it, if it were mine.

Stock front propshaft will fit but will cause driveline vibrations.

The BDS lift and your choosen wheel offset should be good.

Thanks Guys!

I checked the codes in the glovebox and the only (G) codes I have are GT4 & G80. So I assume my truck has the 3:73's.

Will the truck only vibrate in "Auto four wheel" or will it vibrate in 4 high & low as well?

If I go with the 35's will the trimming consist of just minor plastic trimming? No metal fab I hope.

The 35's on the rims you mentioned should only be plastic trimming. Not 100% positive on that though. I have a 4.75 back space on my wheels and I trimmed plastic and struck the rear metal of the front fender a couple of times to "bend" it out of the way. With your back space I would think just some plastic trimming but again I'm pretty much a newbie to all this stuff.

Yes you have 3.73's. And in the years I have had my truck lifted I have yet to experience any vibrations in the driveline nor have I read of any other than on AWD Denali's. And as far as your tires go, I wouldn't expect to trim anything other than plastic.

I see the mention of a 4 and 6 speed transmission in other post, is the 6 speed a manual transmission?

The 6 speed most are referring to is an Auto Transmission.

I don't know what the manual tranny's have...5 maybe. Haven't seen one recently.

We started installing the lift tonight and I hope to have it finished up tomorrow. I'm gonna look like a real goob for a while sporting the stock wheels & tires, but atleast the hard part will be over.

I did find out my truck has the HD towing package, 3:73 gears and the 4 speed transmission with a cooler. I'm going to try to stick with the stock gears and just get a programmer for now.

Post up some pics when you get done.

Even with the stockers.

Great choice on the lift. I run 35`s and love the look and feel of the truck. I also upgraded to the bilstiens... Rides better than stock.

My truck came stock with 3:42 and im going to regear before I tune it.

Like everyone says just plastic trimming should be fine.

Just hate to see you spend that hard earned cash on 33s an later regret you didnt get 35s.

However if you off road alot maybe the 33s will suit u best

After getting most of the lift finished tonight I have finally made up my mind on tire size. I will be going with 35's. I think the 33's would leave just a little too much wheel well opening for my likings. I wasn't expecting the truck to look as tall as it does! You guys really need to stand by your lifted trucks when taking pictures of them. That may help newbie's like myself realize the true size of these trucks when lifted.

Will any alignment shop be able to align my truck, or will I have to take it somewhere special?

Thanks for all your help, you guys are a great!

    • Great info here thank you. I just joined, we have a 2014 Silverado truck we bought about 4 years ago with less than 5,000 miles on it. It has approximately 24,000 on it now. It appears to have all the standard issues that people are talking about. Occasional charging problems especially using 110 volt, occasional blinking triangle where nothing will turn on when first starting the truck but it will reset itself if you wait 10 to 15 minutes. Noisy coupler between the flywheel and the generator. Our truck is speed limited to 74 mph, is there any way to change that? The latest issue we have been dealing with is when driving long distance on the highway at full speed the generator does not keep the batteries charged. The meter will go into the yellow/red border Zone for charge status and the yellow triangle will illuminate solid but the generator will not keep the battery charged, not sure why the controller doesn't tell the gas engine to increase RPM to increase generator output it usually stays well below 25 kilowatts even though the battery is discharging and I have to slow down the highway to 45 mph and eventually pull over and let the truck idle to charge the battery so I can continue driving at speed. Has anyone had this issue before or have any idea how to diagnosed it? When via Motors was around it they were very helpful at troubleshooting. This becomes much if the Terrain is hilly and you're towing a small trailer
    • I have the GMC accessory (REV) cover installed by dealer. Ordered with the truck.  They did a very good install job, can't find a single issue. Some water gets in around the tailgate but no where else.  You can see daylight around the tailgate but that's not the covers fault.  Installation is means everything. Guys at my dealer were seasoned pros, not inexperienced here today good tomorrow types, like many dealers employ for these jobs.   I don't mind paying for a professional job.
    • Like others have said, they will all leak. Mainly at the corners.   I have owned several and the best has been my current one. Revolver x4
    • About 8 months after an alignment job by the dealer I started experiencing a pretty significant clunk in the front end on hard left hand turns usually parking lot speeds almost at lock.  Occasionally get the same on hard rights too.   Discovered that the lower control arm attachment bolts are TTY and only to be used for a single use. And then I found some evidence of a TSB that indicates you can over torque those fasteners to about 130 foot pounds.   Asked a local shop to investigate and they found 3 out of four bolts loose and retorqued.   I've ordered the MOOG    K100421 lower control arm bolt kit that is completely reusable and not TTY.    Is the 80 ft pounds a realistic number?  Anyone have experience with those bolts?
    • subscribe to alldata.com, that will have gm's brake bleeding procedure.  and what you have to do likely varies, as if you just replaced a caliper and the MC didn't go dry, you most likely can just do a normal bleed on that corner, but if you disconnected lines at the MC or the abs unit, or let the MC run dry while doing work, you'll have to do a more extensive/complicated bleeding procedure.
