Auto 4wd

Recommended Posts

The best info I have is from my 2000. Back in 03 I drove around the entire month of December in Auto 4wd (we had a bunch of snow). Normally I got 13 mpg daily driving. During this time it dropped to 10 mpg.

My truck been in AUTO for some weeks now (snow and iced roads here). My mpg only seems to have gone down about 0.3. I just drove 250 miles with it in AUTO (bad roads). I watch guys with 4x4 trucks driving around in 2wd all the time, sliding, spinning the rear wheels and driving half out of control. Just yesterday a guy came around the corner by my home apparently in 2wd (06 Chevy CC 1500) on snow covered roads and spun sideways nearly clipping a person walking. I know the guy, ran into him later at the bank and mentioned I seen him slide around my corner. Asked him why he is not in AUTO 4x4 and his answer was, the truck uses to much gas in AUTO or 4x4. Why did he even buy a 4x4 then? Claims he only uses 4x4 when he gets stuck and can't go any more in 2wd.

The worst I've ever lost is about 1 mpg. Not too bad since the system has bailed me out of trouble several times without be locked in 4x4. True 4x4 mode tends take a lot more mpg (3-5) out of the truck. Since moving to Georgia I only used Auto when it's raining outside (pavement has seashells mixed in it) & 4x4 when I drive on the several dirt paths/roads that are in my area. 4x4 is only because otherwise I wouldn't have a use for the system. Beside throwing mud around is a whole lot of fun... :D
