20" Wheels On A Z71

I just purchased a used 08 GMC Sierra 1500 Z71 that has 6,000 miles. It came with 20" premium GMC rims with 275/55 tires, and I've noticed that the manual says "if your vehicle does not have four-wheel drive or is equipped with 20" tire/wheel assemblies, you should not drive off-road unless you are on a level, solid surface." I do not plan on doing any off-road driving, and will only use the 4WD if it is icy or snowy. What are the concerns with the 20" tire/wheels with this truck? Do I need to look at getting some 18" rims and tires for it? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Those are nice, i dont know why you wouldnt be able to use your 4wd cause they come with 20s on most from the factory just not on Z71 package?

I am installing Factory 22s on Mine and my husband said it will be fine.

If you put them up for sale im sure you could sell them quickly on here

there is nothing to worry about. I did tons of off-roading in my ford with 20s with no problem. Along with some of my friends even have 22s with no issues

No issues on my 20's...heck I even did some off-roading with my old 26s at one point. Nothing crazy but it was gravel road for a couple km.

for some reason GM doesn't think that rims 20" and bigger belong off road, hence why there is no such thing as a Z71 from the factory with 20" wheels. I believe it's more to do with the sidewall, or lack of the sidewall on a tire mounted to a 20" wheel.

+1...... but to the OP there is nothing the 20s cant handle that you can do at stock level of power, suspension, or ride height

Its because the sidewall might get punchered by a rock or you may knock the bead off the wheel. Both cases would either take bad luck or some hardcore offroading.

 

Just don't go rock crawling or doing doughnuts on ruts and you will be fine.

You might need a 4x4 with them 26s on a gravel road.

I've heard something about 20's and chains, but nothing about off roading on 20's. I'll double check my manual. What page did you find that on?
