5.3 Liter Tune Up...

So beside plugs and wires, what would be needed for a good tune up on this truck?

That is pretty much it. Maybe go back over all your grounds to clean them up and clean up the battery if needed. Also check the belt and change both out.

Air filter, Oil change(if its needed)

 

Depends on how far you want to get into it, I would also do a good grease job on the front end, check all the fluid levels and check the brakes.

If this is your '03 you're talking about, then you still should have a fuel filter that can be serviced.

You gotta love these newer engines. They may be a PITA to disgnose or repair, but they sure are easy to maintain. I remember my first truck, 87 Ram 150 with a 318. The tune up list for that thing was as long as my arm.

While not part of a "tune up" as most people would think, have you serviced all your fluids, hoses, belts, thermostat, etc...?

What do you have to do to a thermostat aside from just replacing it?

Ditto on Plugs, wires, Power Steering flush, Brake system flush, give her a seafoam treatment and run a bottle of Techron thru the fuel tank, THEN Change the oil (always change the oil after doing a Seafoam treatment) Rear Diff service, (USE THE RIGHT FLUID!) And replace the serp belt. Also do a coolant system flush as well, maybe consider replacing the thermostat at the same time (If your 100,000 miles or over)

Thats what I thought, but I wanted to make sure there wasnt something I should be doing but didnt know about. My new-to-me 05 is about to turn 90k so Im paying close attention to topics like this so I can get it tuned up right without wasting money on unneeded parts.

whats the price tag on a dealer service on this stuff... i can't do brakes and just had p.s. done (p.s. was 100 plus tax alone)

I wouldnt let the dealer touch my truck. Im convinced they have no idea what the hell they are doing and will ignore a problem until it turns into something major. I trust my local guy more than any dealer anywhere. I usually do it myself, but if I dont have time, my local mechanic will usually charge between $35 and $45 per job. Thats parts and labor.

 

Thats for quick tune up stuff. Obviously he charges more for bigger jobs.
