Oil Cap

Just adding some oil this afternoon and saw this brown burnt gunk on the oil cap. Never had this on any other vehicle. Normal or not?

Mine looks sorta like that and I have 141,000 trouble free miles, so.....

I'll have to check mine, but the last time I did an oil change (about 3-4 months ago) she was all black underneath. Is that water under the cap? Did you try to wash it off? If not then that's not good.

Yeah it was water, well ice at first since it is about 15 here today. Wiped the moisture off but the brown stuff stayed put. Didn't try to scrub it or anything. Why is that not good?

Looks like the inside of an engine that doesn't get up to operating temperature very often. It is also an indication that the PCV system might not be working properly.

 

Just curious, what type of oil do you use and how often do you change it?

My 99 and now my 08 both have similar residue. I think it's just oil vapor depositted on the cap and some moisture vapor as well. Nothing I'd get worked up about. I don't think it's indicative of any problem with crankcase ventilation.

Looks like the inside of an engine that doesn't get up to operating temperature very often. It is also an indication that the PCV system might not be working properly.

 

Just curious, what type of oil do you use and how often do you change it?

 

I use what the dealer put in which I think is 5w30. Have only changed the oil once after almost 6k which is longer that I usually go. It has been about 3k since then. I bought the truck in March of last year so I don't really know the history of the first 38k miles but I have about a 20 to 30 minute commute every day so that should be plenty of time to get up to temp. If I take it to the dealer you think they'll just say everything is ok? I hate to waste my time.

Sounds like all is well with your oil changes and you have a long enough commute to work. That is more what I would expect to see from someone that just drives 3 miles or less to work and back. Something that the vehicle didn't get up to operating temp on a daily basis or ones that have a coolant issue and it is getting into the engine oil. Just curious but are you loosing any coolant?

 

Maybe more will chime in as one already has stating they have the same thing.

I haven't lost any coolant. Just burn a little oil.

I had the same thing on my 2000 and now my 2010 truck and 2008 Tahoe. Both ran/run Mobil 1 5W-30. I have about a 13 mile trip to work and it gets to operating temps. I just wipe it off and go on with things.

Rememebered this thread while changing the oil last night, my oil cap had some brown underneath it as well, if I recall I've had other vehicles that have this aswell, I'll check my sisters pontiac later see if it has it as well.

 

I drive 55kms to work each way and 40 of it is on the freeway so there is no issue of "not warming up"

My 2001 looks almost exactly the same and ive got a leaking intake manifold gasket or a leaking head gasket.4.3L v6 engine.

Its very normal because the filler neck is the highest point of the crankcase. Moisture will form there and other residue. Mine has done that since new, ive wiped it off a few times. It will not do this as much in the summer.
