Gas Mileage

I keep seeing people on here claiming they are getting 17-18 on the highway and 14-15 in town. I commute 35 miles each way to work everyday that is all highway and have never reset the fuel economy computer in the 18 months since I bought the truck new. With 80% of my driving on a 4 lane highway it still says I am only getting 14 MPG.

According to my dash display I get an average of 15.3 mpg on my '07 Silverado 5.3L with (I'm estimating here) roughly 40% hwy and 60% city driving.

I get 10-12 MPG on stop and go, and on a 300 mile interstate trip i get about 15 with the cruise on.

If i had smaller tires and got rid of my winch, brushguard, toolbox, and subs and then put some smaller tires on then i'd probably get a 2 more mpg.

If i had long tube headers, a blackbear tune, and new CAI, and then some new plugs and wires, then i might get 3-4 more mpg

You should reset the fuel economy when you fill up.

I know im comparing apples to oranges, different model trucks and all but im only getting 11 city/ 13.6 highway. Id be tickled with an average of 14. But then again its a truck you cant expect it to get great gas mileage.

Just wondering why you say that? Mine was last reset 12/20/2008. About 15,000 miles ago. My DIC says 15.8 mpg. Thats about 40% hiway 60% city. I have a 5.3 4 spd w/AFM that changes between 4cyl and 8cyl seamlessly. And 3.42 gears.

A lot has to do with your speed.....stating the obvious aren't I.

For example, in my truck (although it's diesel but that doesn't matter for this example), if I travel at 60mph, I can get 20mpg easy. At 55mph, 22mph. At 70mph (what I travel at the most), 17mpg.

So I guess I can claim anywhere between 17mpg-22mpg highway.

He said that because its a quote from the Owners manual. Lots of informative reading in there, try it.

Have you ever done a manual calculation of MPG?

Answer up on your rear gear ratio, engine size, and trans type. I get 18 -19 highway with avg conditions. 15.8 city. That's with a 3.73, no AFM and BB tune, which sometimes makes it hard to drive conservatively.

My 2009 crew cab Z71 4x4 with 5.3L AFM V8 and 6-speed auto, 3.42 gears, has never quite gotten gas mileage as good as advertised on original sticker, and I'm easy on the gas pedal and the brakes in this truck. [Hammer down in the T/A, though  ] (In summer, I get actual 13 in town, 17 on hwy, avg 15 overall; not 14 city and 20 hwy shown on sticker.) Granted, I do use the remote start in the winter, and it runs more like 11 city/17 hwy then. Also, I've found the instant & avg fuel mileage and gallons used shown in the DIC are always 20% overoptimistic from my actual calculations.

I get 10 around town and 12 hwy. I'm also at 5000ft. Thats with 6.0L, 4.10 gears, lift, tires, CAI, and a heavy foot. At 65mph I could get 13.5 but 80mph is worth the extra gas.
