Need help deciding whether to rebuild my small block 350 or buy a big block. I think it is a 78 350 from word of the previous owner but the engine id is chipped.

 

Sorry I used to be strictly Dodge don't know the pros and cons of the two. I do not plan on any boring or the like.

A good 350 is hard to beat, especially if it is a four bolt main. On the other hand, if it's a toy, a built 454 can be lots of fun.

daily driver. I could probably drive the thing for a couple years and not need to rebuild it but it was somebody else's. I just got their jacked up wiring and shift tube problem solved so I would not actually trust any of their previous work. This weekend's plan is plugs, wires, distributor and rotor. If I got the money a new fuel filter and in line filter.

 

What about a big block 350 is it that much different from the one I have now.

no such thing as a big block 350. 350 is a small block and was chevys main motor for a while, tried and true. if its a 78 you probly have a two piece rear main with a two bolt. the big block is a 454. they tend to be very torqey (from the factory that is) unless you build them for more HP. horrible for gas milage though (with gas prices projected to go through the roof soon...). for your use id just rebuild the 350, or go to a junk yard, find a nice block, and start from there so you can still drive the thing daily. that way you know what your working with from the ground up. a good rebuild kit, take the heads to a shop and have them clean them up and rebuild them, and you have yourself a nice new engine.

Get a built 383..tooo much fun..also ALOT of trouble save some money for tickets if you get a built 383!
