2012 Sierra 5.3L not sure about block, uses about 1 qt by 3k after oil change, sometimes more. Started consumption test at dealership first 2k no change so I dropped it. Had #7 plug go bad, didn't think to ask the mech about the plug, I didn't think it was connected now it makes me wonder.I use pensoil platnum pure synthetic 5w-30. Oh yea about 55k miles. If there is something I should do or can do to eliminate this problem please let me know. THanks

 

Best bet...trade it in.

Other than that keep bugging your dealer.

Turn off AFM and add catch can asap before rings clog anymore than what they have now.

I have a 2008 GMC Sierra SLT 1500 Z71 4X4 (GMT902)

Engine: (LC9) 5.3 Liter Vortex Flex Fuel V8 SFI

Transmission: 4L60-E

 

I bought it January 03, 2015 with 86,204 miles, the day I drove it off the lot I recieved a LOW OiL Pressure warning "SHUT OFF ENGINE". I pulled over and called the dealer. They asked me to confirm that it had oil in the engine, which it did and to bring it back. Once back, the service department looked at the engine and said that they need to install a Bosch oil filter instead of a generic one. So they did another oil (Castrol Oil) & filter change and the problem went away. Fast forward to March 13, 2015 two and a half months and about 4,000 miles later. I notice that the oil pressure guage start acting strange, it would drop to no pressure on braking and would move up to 60 PSI on acceleraltion. I checked the oil and there was no oil on the dip stick. It took 3 quarts to get it a little more than half way up the dip stick. After this iInoticed the the oil pressure sensor would move up near 60 PSI when I would give the engine gas. So on March 16, 2015 I took it to the local Chervrolet Dealership. They looked at the engine and stated that it needed a new engine, cost $8,000.00. I then took it back to the dealership I purchased the vehicle from because it came with a 100,000 mile Limited Powetrain Warranty. They call it their CCP (Certified Confidance Protection) Plan and advertise it on all their used vehicles. The Dealer that I purchase from is a Porsche, VW, Volvo dealership and does not want to work on the engine and wanted to sub out the repair to Cheverlot, (which sound right to me). The Warranty company is CNA and they stated that if there is not a broken/failed part they would not replace the engine and that the problem my engine has is most likely a a wear item, like built-up carbon on the pistons and rings. They also said I would have to foot the bill if the the Chevrolt dealer pulled the engine and no actual failed item was found, at a cost of $1560.00. The Chevrolt Dealer agreed that it could indeed be that but that the engine needs to be replaced. I have gone back and found that this engine was worked on under warranty by the previos owner at around 33,000 and then again at 66,000 for the oil consumption but it seems that it was never correctly fixed. First the valve cover was replaced and then something else to do with lifters. If they did not correctly fix the vehicle the first time or the second time for the same problem, shouldn't they be required to fix it under warranty? I am totally fusturated. What can I do?

Just bought a 2011 4.8 - no oil use with 1,500 km/938 miles on what ever the dealer puts in. Going 5W30 Petro Can full syn next change.

I've been watching this oil usage issue a long time now. Sick of it. My '96 5.7 used NO oil! And I could get 20 mpg highway. Extended cab, loooong bed too. Dagnabbit, GM is running customers away.

I feel the blame needs to be pushed on the EPA and their insane MPG requirements.

I've been watching this oil usage issue a long time now. Sick of it. My '96 5.7 used NO oil! And I could get 20 mpg highway. Extended cab, loooong bed too. Dagnabbit, GM is running customers away.

Yep - they've forced alot of manufacturers to cut corners just to survive.

 

The EPA has done more harm to this nation the past 20 years than good. Another gigantic, bloated, goverment bureaucracy that needs to be defunded ... much like the majority of them. :puke:

Sounds to me like you got stuck with a trade in, somebody got sick of dealing with. Anything older than an 06 with a 5.3 will never enter my driveway again.

2007 5.3L Suburban LTZ with 200,800 miles. I've owned it since it had 7,000 miles and have always used Mobil 1 fully synthetic.

 

I started to notice some oil consumption at about 150,000 miles. I typically change the oil about every 8,000 miles or when my wife tells me it's saying it's time to change the oil. One day, she decided to take it upon herself to just reset the oil change indicator when it said it was time to change the oil and not tell me. I get a call from her one day that the suburban is showing the engine oil low indicator. So I check my records and it's been over 12,000 miles since the last oil change...WTF! That's when she told me she had been resetting the change oil indicator and not telling me. She's lucky this car tell us the oil is low, otherwise, she'd be driving my beat up '99 intrepid if the engine seized!

 

I figure it's burning 1 quart every 4,000 miles now as it's usually down about 2 quarts when I change the oil at 8,000 miles.

 

I may throw a catch can on it to see how much blow-by it happening. I replaced a bad oil pressure sending unit on it today and had to remove the intake to get to it due to the rear sound dampening cover in the way. There was a little coating of oil in the intake but it also has 200,000 miles on it.

 

I have the newly designed valve cover to install along with some GM top end cleaner to clean the rings but haven't gotten around to that yet. I'm hesitant to install the AFM deflector shield as I hear a special alignment tool is required to properly align the oil pain.

At that many miles I'd just go back to dino oil - will probably cut consumption quite a bit, plus the oil is much cheaper. I run Pennzoil in all my burners/leakers. Run it into the ground - get your money's worth. You got lucky it started burning at that many miles - you must've got a Monday engine. Mine started at 50k miles.

 

Still running Amsoil in the Silverado - how much I use depends on how much I keep my foot out of it. Frequent trips to 5k, this thing will burn a quart in 300 miles. If I keep the RPM's in check, a quart will go almost 8k miles. Signature series can go 25k or one year - I don't drive half that in a year, so I typically leave it in longer than 1 year. Currently tossing around changing it today ... or adding a quart. Might just change it since it's been 14 months.

Well I have a 2010 camaro and a 2010 silverado, my truck has been burning oil since 44,000 miles, I see chevy never came out and took care of there customers ?

 

The solution is to trade in ?

 

I am seriously so disgusted I am going to trade it in for a plastic junk doge ram.

 

I have been driving nothing but GM since I was 16, mad I have finally had enough!

You & me both, 1911. Next vehicle I buy I'm building myself, based off a vehicle built back when manufacturers gave a s***.

 

 

Got lazy today and just dumped a quart in. We'll see how long that one lasts. If the usage gets worse, I'll just save the expensive oil for customer's vehicles & go back to dino.

So I posted around this time last year about the oil consumption issues I was having with my 09 Silverado with the LY5 motor. I had the de-carb, updated valve cover installed, AFM deflector installed and pistons/rings replaced. After this was done, everything seemed fine, no oil consumption at all. Since the factory warranty has expired at this point, I decided to get a premium tune and the tuner deactivated AFM. Then, later on, the time comes for an oil change, so I give it the synthetic blend Pennzoil that I normally do. It starts consuming oil again. Not at a ridiculous rate but enough to aggravate me since I had all the work done to correct this issue and had AFM deactivated like everyone here seems to believe is a fix for this issue.

 

I just did an oil change a couple months ago at 85k miles (I'm close to 89k miles now). I figured I would try something different and go Mobil 1 full-synthetic (the dexos approved one). Would you believe it if I told you that after almost 4k miles I'm still at the full mark on my dipstick? That is with a very minor leak around the oil filter too. I haven't figured out if the leak is due to the oil filter or the synthetic oil. I tightened it down and it still leaks a little. I guess we'll find out with the next oil change if anything changes. My only complaint with the full synthetic oil is the valvetrain is much more noisy than it was when I ran the synthetic blend.

 

So in my experience, oil seems to make a difference, at least with my engine. I've ran Pennzoil in the past with my previous vehicles and never had a consumption problem, but it seems to be a factor with this one.

Interesting observation. My 2011 AFM 5.3L has 25k on the clock, with current GM upgrades. No oil consumption, but looking into catch can filter from Mann (still closed loop system). I have oil analysis done every oil change, copper was high but down to good levels. Iron still on high side, run nothing but Pennsoil Ultimate Duribility (full synthetic Dexos II approved). may switch to Mobil 1. When the LS motors came out inthe Corvettes, !obil 1 was the oil reccomended by GM.

The oil consumption on my '07 is variable, dependent upon how hard I push it. If I tow on a hilly highway and leave cruise control on so it screams to 5400 RPM on every hill for 10 minutes at a whack, I'll burn a quart in 300 miles. If I keep it mellow and never let it go above 3k, I can go over 6,500 miles and not use a drop.

    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package. 
    • So, do I go elbow-deep on this thing or list it for sale and play dumb? Seems to "runs good."   I'm about $1200 away from having: -a rebuilt injector ($300) -a new cat ($250) -a new cat back exhaust (OE style) ($300) -a new AC compressor ($200) -AC refrigerant charge ($150)   In theory, this should rectify the obvious detracting issues from its value and operability. Cold AC with a non-squeaking AC pulley both sounds and feels good. An exhaust that isn't cut/hacked in 17 different places and doesn't vibrate on a crossmember would make it sound and feel less janky. A working cat would help the stink, and will save the earth, but *if and only if* the fuel system is working properly, which would also address the intermittent "rich" CEL.   Heard a good one... CEL for "Rich condition" means you haven't spent enough money on the truck lately, and it's letting you know.   Rebuilding the injector would seem to be the most important part. Replacing the cat would be secondary. I don't think mine is plugged or overly restricted, but it might be a little restricted? I have no good way to tell other than seat of the pants feel. I hate the smell.   The current theory is I have a rich idle problem: A bad fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking injector(s) being the highest probabilities. I already replaced the FPR but that doesn't mean its replacement isn't also bad. It was a new part from Dorman, but the packaging looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for 20 years.   This is the (single) upstream O2 sensor shown at idle. I'm getting a lot of "rich" it seems. Sometimes it stays high like that and doesn't drop down. That makes me think it's processing injector leaks or a partially stuck open injector.     Other times it looks like this. Nice oscillations between rich and lean, which is what I think it should be. Under load and at speed, the oscillations are nice and tight and uniform looking, high and low.     Fuel trims suggest the PCM is compensating pretty hard at idle to pull fuel out. But it's not enough to trip a CEL. Something about slowing to a stop: brake vaccum booster, EGR, or the EVAP purge is delayed, or there's pooled fuel in the intake again that's draining into a cylinder is enough to set the CEL. Of course, in two days of driving, it hasn't set. I was hoping to actually look at the freeze-frame data when it sets. IAT is high because it's idling on an 83 degree day here.  
    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
