Airaid Jr Installed

I installed an Airaid Jr Intake kit on my 05 Silvy, and I think Im experiencing some loss on the low end. I didnt notice it immediatemly because I was hammering it pretty hard to see if I improved anything, but now that I have started to drive normally again, it feels a little sluggish under my normal driving. Maybe its all just in my head. Has anyone else experienced this?

(1) Did you disconnect your battery during installation of the Airaid?

(2) Do you have an aftermarket exhaust?

No, I didnt. I figured since Im not doing anything electrical then it shouldnt have mattered. I always thought the battery disconnecting step was to cover their butt against some freak accident where the truck starts on its own.

I installed the Spectra CAI and the Airaid TBS on my 6.0. I didn't disconect the battery and havn't had any problems. I don't think those things increase your power at all. I did it for the sound.

you may need to give the PCM about 100 mi or so to recalibrate at normal driving..

good luck

I took it on a 300 mile trip this weekend, and still noticed it. I dont notice it all the time so Im not sure if its there and Im not always paying attention to it, or if its just in my head.

Im not worried about gains. I know they dont help much if any at all with HP. Im worried about the loss of Tq that I occasionally feel at lower RPM. Even if the intakes dont add power, they shouldnt reduce power, right?

From most of the info I've read on CAI's the only way to tell any difference is to compare before/after on a dyno. Any gains and/or losses are usually too minimal to tell by "seat of the pants." That being said, something that adds top end power can very likely reduce low end torque and this is often the case with real high performance items so builders have to build to a certain spec or find a happy medium depending on the application.

Adding a less restrictive CAI should not in priciple hurt engine performance, but since the new CAI may effect intake air flow through the mass air flow (MAF) sensor it could have an effect on performance. That is why they tell you to unhook your battery prior to doing this upgrade, because a battery disconnect will reset the PCM/ECM computers. These computers continously adjust to changing driving conditions and driving style of the operator, but I believe it collects data over time and makes small adjustments based on the average data values. This approach works well as long as nothing major is changed in the vehicle, but if something is change like your CAI upgrade, you're better off resetting the computers, so they can start with all new data to relearn the new air-flow characteristics of the intake side of the engine. The same would be true if you later add a new less-restrictive CAT back exhaust system.

Well, Im changing out my radio this weekend so I will be disconnecting the battery then anyway. The swap should take about 15 minutes so that should allow the computer the reset. Maybe that will help.
