Rusty 6" Oval Gm Steps With A Year

Recommended Posts

As the title states, I took my truck back to the dealership last week because of cracked chrome and rust on my less than a year 6" oval GM Steps. Since I installed them myself on my 2010 GMC Sierra, they only gave me a 1 years/12000 mile waranty on them (3 year 36K miles if you had them installed by the dealership). Luckily I was less than a week from the waranty and only 8k miles on the truck. I talked to the guy in the parts department and he says I was the 4th set in the last 2 weeks covered under waranty. Bad thing is no waranty on the next set. I was wondering if anyone else had plating issues on these steps. I have a good feeling that the next set will be as bad.

heard about a couple of guys but nothing major...sell em and get yourself some that have a lifetime warranty...

So, what kind of BS is this? They sell you crappy pair of oval steps, you take them back during the warranty period, they give you a new set that is just as crappy, and no warranty now? One time replacement, so GM can make substandard quality crap in China and sell it to us chumps for hundreds of dollars? I am getting really tired of this.

I am pissed off because I wanted to buy a set of these for my truck. Not anymore. This company will go down the toilet fast if they keep this up.

Maybe it is appropriate to mention that the cost of these steps when sold installed on a new truck is about $ 600. Not just pocket change for most of us.

I was thinking about getting a set of these 6" oval bars for my 2011 GMC, but I decided to get a set of Nasta Polished SS bars instead. The Nasta bars have a lifetime warranty and come with all SS hardware and they only cost $299 with free S/H. I should receive them on Monday and I will try to remember to post a picture and a review once I get them installed.

BTW I ordered them from: http://www.runningboardworld.com/

The only issue with these Nasta bars is that they do not package them adequately and some arrive dinged on the tubes themselves. Checks yours over carefully. I will probably order these as well. These should also have stainless steel mounting brackets. I have seen them for sale also without stainless brackets, just stainless bolts, but for less money.

Have had my GM 6" ovals for almost a year now and put them on myself. So far so good. Solid, still shine up good when I wash it and no spots or indications of any rust. NOW, I live in southeast Georgia, so we don't have to salt our roads during the winter. I don't know if the OP lives in a place that uses salt on the roads during the winter, or lives near the ocean, or if he (and the others that the parts guy said) just got a bad set (mostly made on Fridays and Mondays). All of the people I know down here that have them have never had a problem with them. Now I am sure I will go out tomorrow morning and find one of mine hanging off one side due to a rust through just because I said mine were fine. Not saying they are the best ones out there, but they are the ones I can comment on. Good luck with the next ones.

I've sold lots of these, and the 3" round ones as well,no issues here, and we have lotsa' salt in the winter around here!

Mine are pitted...little rust spots all over the place...it comes off with a little elbow grease, but still. There's next to no salt here, and I have only had the truck for 6 months and 12000KM. They were on the truck when I got it...dealer installed option. If they get worse I guess I'll be going in and trying my luck at getting a black set.

Odd. I have the round GM ones and we have lots of salt here in the winter too and no issues. :(

That's because the round bars are made (or as least used to be made) from chromed stainless steel. Not the oval ones, apparently.

Ya'll need to stop buying GM aftermarket parts and go with companies who stand behind their products.

They were on my truck...I got em for "FREE" apparently. :(:lol:

I knew just looking at em that they were gonna be a pain in the arse.

Ahh. Well in that case I'm glad I got those ones.

I received my Nasta bars today and the box and contents arrived totally undamaged. I inspected everything and it all looked great. I'm very impressed with the polished SS finish on these bars and the SS brackets and hardware look very stout and well engineered. I'm thinking these bars might out live my truck. :idiot:

    • These show the problem and symptoms, and I explain things too. to clarify again, I did not change over any computers or wiring (with the exception of the map sensor). All of the computers and wiring are original to the 2010 vehicle   video 1 - background info/explanation and part of the problem   video 2, idle misfire   I think the reason that the MAP sensor is reading High is because the engine is misfiring so there is less vacuum...   Additionally there's a p0102 for the MAF low frequency, and a p0108 for the map high voltage.        Again, apologies for the somewhat long-winded explanation, it's a rather difficult problem to explain without going into the details.
    • You'd want the Pulsar to be safe.  That was the first product that worked for 10 speed trucks that they came out with.   Range Technology 22451 Pulsar LT for 2019-2022 GM Gas Trucks     That said, in the features description of the RA003B, it does list it working with 10 speeds.  However there are reports that the RA003B can cause some drivability issues on early 10 speeds.  So the Pulsar is the safest move IMO.      Range Technology RA003B AFM/DFM Disabler   Features: Range AFM/DFM Disabler keeps you in full power 100% of the time Simply plug into your onboard OBD-II port and it instantly begins working to eliminate the AFM system Disables Auto Start/Stop Blue LEDs The Range AFM/DFM Disabler does not reprogram factory ECU Works in hundreds of applications, 2007-2022, including 10-speed models. Leaves no trace, unplug it to return to factory settings Virtually no battery draw Fits all V6 and V8 General Motors (GM) active or dynamic fuel management vehicles, includes cars, trucks, and SUVs This device does not support the 2022.5+ Refresh model trucks or 2021+ SUVs To confirm your 2022 model truck is compatible with this unit, check your VIN. • I have a 2019 new body style high country with a 6.2l L87 and a 10 speed transmission code MQB. Looking for a disabler that is compatible. Most show it’s not. I watched a video on utube from Dons Life that says Ranges RA003B is compatible but when you go to Ranges website and check compatibility it only has a 8L90 trans listed which is an 8 speed.  I don’t want to buy the wrong one. Anyone have any experience with this situation?
    • This actually happened. Be careful where you get your information re: gas price trends.
    • I understand the principle...you don't want to spend $150 for a $0.02 piece of plastic or a little screw and perch thingy.   But this is a problem that looks like it can be reliably solved with a zip tie.   That might hold you over until you can score one at a pick-a-parts yard.
