Can I change a thromstat without draining the whole system? I just got a system flush yesterday and don't want to drain the whole system if I don't have to. And if so how much will I lose? Thanks

Count on at least 1 gallon, probably more. Just buy you 1 gallon of coolant. That will make 8 quarts when mixed

Pay attention and buy the straight antifreeze, not the pre mixed......

Be sure you install the new thermostat with the spring facing the engine block.

Just drain the radiator into a pan, then pour it back in through a painter's filter or some cheese cloth. It won't hurt anything.

I guess you've now learned you should replace your thermostat while getting the coolant changed eh?

Ya it took a while for parts to be available/reasonably priced for gmt900! Finally though things are looking good now!

Hurrmm.. I thought I was doing well on my 2000 Silverado until I popped mine loose, and it all came gushing out of the motor from underneath the thermostat, lol. If you really want to save it, I would drain it into a clean pan.

If you do that, make sure you use distilled water to mix with it. Using tap water is a leading cause of gunk building up inside the cooling system.
