DETROIT (AP) - General Motors' U.S. car and truck sales jumped 49 percent in February, aided by sweeter financing and lease deals.

The largest U.S. car company says it sold 207,000 vehicles last month as newer models continued to sell well in a slowly improving economy.

U.S. sales chief Don Johnson says GM's sales were strong across its model lineup. He says consumers are looking at small cars but have not yet changed buying habits due to higher gas prices.

GM sweetened incentives for buyers in January and February. But Johnson says the company will back off later in the year.

Industry analysts expect overall U.S. sales to rise about 20 percent from February of last year.

GM is the first major car company to report U.S. sales on Tuesday.

The day after I bought my truck the front page of the Globe and Mail business section was an article about how truck sale were increasing again, thought that was kind of funny

DETROIT – General Motors total sales in the United States rose 49 percent in February, as dealers reported 207,028 deliveries for the company’s four brands. For the second month in a row, the gain in total sales was driven by soaring retail demand for the company’s products. During the month, retail sales rose 70 percent – the highest year-over-year gain in the company’s history.

For the first two months of the year, GM’s total sales have risen 36 percent, while the company’s retail sales – those to individual consumers – have increased by 52 percent.

Retail sales of GM’s cars, trucks and crossovers all rose at least 59 percent or more during the month, up 76 percent, 74 percent and 59 percent, respectively.

“Our plan was to get off to a quick start this year, and we did just that,” said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. “Having the right vehicles in inventory, combined with aggressive advertising and targeted consumer marketing has been the key to our success in the first two months this year.”

Newest Vehicles Lead Gains, More Than Doubling During February

Combined sales for GM’s newest vehicles – Chevrolet Equinox, Silverado HD, Cruze and Volt; Buick LaCrosse and Regal; GMC Sierra HD and Terrain; and Cadillac SRX, CTS Wagon and CTS Coupe – increased 66 percent, while retail sales surged 119 percent for the month, compared to February 2010.

Passenger Cars

Total sales of GM passenger cars improved 40 percent during February, led by the sale of 18,556 Chevrolet Cruzes. Retail sales of GM passenger cars rose 76 percent for the month, with Cruze retail sales 212 percent higher than the compact car it replaced. Strong retail sales of the all-new Cadillac CTS Coupe helped propel CTS retail sales to a record high for the month of February, up 159 percent versus a year ago. The Buick Regal had its best month since launch, recording 3,541 retail sales.

Crossovers

February total sales for GM’s industry-leading lineup of fuel-efficient crossovers were the best ever for the month, increasing 57 percent versus February 2010. Each of GM’s most popular crossovers set a record for retail sales for the month of February – Chevrolet Equinox (up 98 percent) and Traverse (up 32 percent); GMC Terrain (up 76 percent) and Acadia (up 25 percent); Buick Enclave (45 percent); and Cadillac SRX (up 62 percent). Combined retail sales for these models rose 58 percent during the month, compared to last year’s month.

Pickups and Utilities

Total sales of GM’s full-size pickup trucks – Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche, and GMC Sierra – improved 65 percent in February versus a year ago, with retail sales rising 83 percent. Total sales of GM full-size utilities – Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade – rose 50 percent during the month, with combined retail sales improving 52 percent.

Month-end dealer inventory in the United States stood at about 517,000 units, which is about 7,000 higher compared to January and about 101,000 higher than February 2010.

February Sales Results

Don Johnson

03/02/2011

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We planned to get 2011 off to a quick start and we’ve succeeded – total sales of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles rose 49 percent in February. For the second month in a row, our sales gains were driven by soaring retail demand from our customers – up 70 percent. This is the highest year-over-year gain in GM’s history.

Retail sales of our cars, trucks and crossovers all increased at least 59 percent or more during February, up 76 percent, 74 percent and 59 percent, respectively. Our newest products led these gains, more than doubling last month. Combined sales of the Chevrolet Equinox, Silverado HD, Cruze and Volt; Buick LaCrosse and Regal; GMC Sierra HD and Terrain; and Cadillac SRX, CTS Wagon and CTS Coupe increased 66 percent, while retail sales surged 119 percent for the month, compared to February 2010.

Total sales of GM passenger cars improved 40 percent last month, led by the Chevrolet Cruze with 18,556 units sold. Sales for our industry-leading lineup of fuel-efficient crossovers were the best ever for the month of February, up 57 percent, while total sales of our full-size pickups improved 65 percent in February versus a year ago, with retail sales rising 83 percent.

Having the right vehicles in inventory, combined with aggressive advertising and targeted consumer marketing proved to be a recipe for great results so far this year. We plan to continue to work our plan in March and close out the first quarter strong as we head into the important spring selling season.

Subject: Chevrolet Retail Sales up 69%

In February 2011, Chevrolet retail sales were up 69% over February 2010! Last month was the sixth month in row of year-over-year Chevrolet retail sales increases. Chevrolet cars posted a 62% retail sales increase while Chevrolet trucks achieved a 73% retail sales increase.

Fourteen different Chevrolet vehicles turned in year-over-year retail sales increases. Following is an abbreviated list of highlights from the month:

Chevrolet Cars & Crossovers:

Equinox retail sales were up 98% in February 2011 vs. February 2010.

Equinox had its best ever February retail sales month.

Equinox remains among the hottest vehicles in the industry with a “days to turn” of 16 days.

Cruze continued to build momentum by posting 18,556 total sales last month.

Cruze retail sales in February 2011 were up 212% versus Cobalt’s retail sales in February 2010.

Malibu notched a year-over-year retail sales increase of 21%.

Malibu had its best retail sales month since July 2004.

Impala and Corvette retail sales were up 63% and 53%, respectively.

Camaro retail sales were also up and over half of Camaro trade-ins for the month were non-GM vehicles.

Volt continues to leave dealer showrooms almost as soon as it arrives with a “days to turn” of just 11 days.

Chevrolet Trucks:

Silverado posted 31,728 total sales in February 2011, up 60% vs. last year.

February 2011 was the 13th consecutive month of year-over-year total sales increases for Silverado.

Silverado turned in an 84% retail sales increase resulting in the 6th consecutive monthly year-over-year retail sales gains.

Tahoe and Suburban posted strong retail sales increases of 58% and 55%, respectively. Avalanche retail sales were also up 37%.

Colorado and Traverse both achieved their 6th consecutive monthly year-over-year retail sales gains with increases in retail deliveries of 99% and 32%, respectively.

Thanks for your efforts to get the 2011 CY to a strong start. Now we must turn our attention to sustaining our momentum as we head into the spring selling season.

Again, thank you for your efforts in February. Let’s work together and build on our momentum in March. Good selling!

Some of these aren't too surprising, though I do wonder why the Mustang sales took a dump. I've now driven base models (rentals) of both and really enjoyed both. The Traverse is certainly a nice ride and has more traditional styling than the Flex so I'm not surprised there. I have actually been driving a Lacrosse this week for work and it is a fantastic car, there is very little I'd change about it. No comment on the Regal/MKZ as I haven't driven either one. Impala vs. Taurus is no surprise given how many Impalas end up in rental yards, the Taurus is a nicer car across the board. The trucks I'd wonder if the production halt had anything to do with the numbers. GM also (thankfully for me!) has some nice incentives on the trucks so that always helps sales to. Cruze/Focus I can't comment on as I haven't driven either one and the CTS vs. Lincoln is no surprise either, I've had a couple CTSs courtesy of Hertz and they are great too- Lincoln has nothing to meet this car. And I haven't driven any of the last 2 pairs either.

    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally.
    • Yes, the key seems to be with the half tons that if it has the Z71, then it definitely has the two speed. What got me was that the two speed AND the lower geared towing package option could not be chosen together the last few years unless it was mated up to the 6.2. Want the 3.0 duramax and 3.73 tow gears ... nope, can't get the two speed transfer case ( neighbor son realized that after he had bought his used 3.0 half ton .. where the frick is the low range ? ! ).    I am still unsure which truck series, the half ton or the HD truck that the original poster is referring to for sure other than yes his question is in the HD section of this forum but that doesn't guarantee the question got asked in the right section.
