Oil Consumption

OK so my truck has 39,200 miles on it.... I changed the oil to M1 5W30 Syn at around 34,500 miles or so at 38,???, I received the add engine oil message and when I looked under the hood it was just barely on the dipstick.

My truck is an 07 LTZ with the power train warranty expiring next year I believe in April or so.

I called the dealer and they said at my next oil change to bring it in for an oil consumption test and then again @ every 1000 mile intervals.

It makes me wonder if I should get an extended warranty through GM about this, the last thing I need is my vehicle to go down on me next year when the warranty expires and then GM wants X amount of money to do whatever their doing now. I think even if I have to spend $1,000 to $1,500 for an extended atleast I know that obviously it will pay for itself if this stuff keeps getting worse.

I love the truck, love everything about it but this has me worried pretty much on my mind thinking what could I be getting myself in too.

Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated. :)

Do the consumption test and go from there. Nothing to worry about... yet. You can worry next March if they haven't figured it out, but you can also contact GM if needed. A known problem documented prior to warranty expiration should still be covered, but I would have that conversation after initial diag/follow-up. It will take a while, but you have plenty of time.

Oil Consumption, What are we going to do

Starting more threads on the subject will fix the problem. :)

i have a 2010 Sierra CC 5.3L....about 10K on it, been using synth. since 1200miles.

I have minor oil loss, but haven't check recently. I usually go 8k between changes with synthetic, i'll check today.

However i did own a saturn SL2 back in the day, and off the lot that thing burned 1.5quarts every 3k.....synthetic slowed it down a little, but not much.

Was at a loss, but i turned it in with 325,000 miles on that thing, and it still pulled strong for that little chain driven 4banger.

One day at a family birthday, i got to talking about it with my brother in laws uncle...of which i never knew till that day that he built the damn saturn motors.

He laughed and nodded his head when i was talking about it, and said, "that's what happens when you have an aluminum block, with steel sleeves lining the cylinders. The different expansion characteristics of the 2 metals is your cause for mystery oil loss."

Doesn't affect performance, nothing is wrong with the motor, its just going to eat up oil and you'll see it on your tailpipe. And that saturn did blow black smoke when asking alot from the motor, the ones i see still on the road (mine was a 96') sure as hell smoke baaaad black oil burning smoke.

Now that may or may not be the case with our truck motors, but i'm sure we have sleeves lining the cylinders of our aluminum blocks....so take that into consideration.

I agree, thats BS what my saturn was doing, and its BS what some of the trucks are doing, but if i had a guess, i'm guessing they are suffering from the same type of design....not going to say "flaw"...but drawback to using a lighter aluminum block.

I would take it in now and have the oil changed again and the test started right away....

When I change my oil, I drain it into an empty bucket, then after I put new oil in my truck... I use the empty quart containers and poor old oil in the new empty containers ..

My first oil change at 2850 miles I think I was 1/3 quart shy... but I spilled the oil filter oil all over my face and drive way ..

G.M. offers many extended warranties I purchased their Major Guard one just a couple months before the factory one ran out. It covers the same things as the original bumper to bumper one with only a small deductable. Have the dealer also pull oil samples for testing if thats not includded in their consumption tests Good luck and keep us posted Dave

I will add this, i had a 2006 Nissan frontier with an aluminum block, and that thing didn't burn one single drop of oil....just rice

My 1995 Nissan hardbody V6 4X4 pickup was the most amazing vehicle as far as oil consumption goes. The crankcase took only 3.5 quarts of oil, including oil filter. However, that truck never consumed a drop of oil that I could see in 10 years of ownership. I changed oil every 3k miles and at the end of evey 3k period the oil level did not drop from the full mark on the dip stick even 1 milimeter. Evey other vehicle I have owned showed some drop in oil level between oil changes.

Trade in or sell the truck now while it is still worth something. Get something without AFM. Best choice you can make at this point.

Well I wouldn't go that extreme.

Question since my truck has 38-39K on it and the regular 36K/3 Yr Expired, can I even purchase a GMPP?

Actually, this may be the best advice in the long run. If I was having any oil burning issues with mine and had low mileage, a shopping I would go...

You sure can but it's gonna be expensive now. That's why I purchased mine when I bought the truck new. It was only a fraction of what it costs @ 36,000K when the factory warranty runs out. I'm covered bumper to bumper out to 72,150 with the Major Guard, and no deductible.

WTI futures <> current 4-7% inflation and national average gas price over $4.00/gallon.   The spot price, at delivery, is currently $87-$95/barrel which is why gas prices remain high.   Edit: oH mY gOd mEnTaL BrEaKdoWn In tHE pOsT aBOve mInE. • He does, actually. In another unrelated video he mentions the president called him in the middle of the night to relay some information on a cause (religious based) that he's invested in. Glenn expressed concern that another leftist administration could wield too much power with some procedure the Pentagon was using, classifying certain religions a certain way. Being that he is LDS (Latter Day Saints), he gets hate all the time from ALL over the political spectrum, so he's invested in this. Trump called him back at 5AM to tell him he had made some changes to that classification.   So, yes, they are and have been in contact regularly since the start of the administration. Glenn, of course, always asks his permission before discussing anything on the air.   I already spent an hour or more just searching for these videos. I may have my numbers wrong - I'm not a numbers guy. It may have been a MILLION barrels, not 1.5. The point is, our President, by his actions, gives a crap about America, and US - this is completely OPPOSITE the actions of the prior administration who projected hatred for anyone who wasn't following the left's edicts in lock-step.   Remember, they called January 6th an "Insurrection", when there were ZERO weapons among the crowd, undercover FBI agents agitating the crowd, along with paid leftists acting as aggressors, egging the crowd on in an attempt to whip everyone into a frenzy. It's all been proven.  Pelosi refused Trumps request for more National Guard troops. This smells 100% like an inside job for those with critical thinking skills. Only a handful of guys in the crowd got wrapped up in that, thankfully, but EVERYONE was searched out based on cell phone data, and charges were brought against many. And 6 or so people were locked up and left in solitary confinement for YEARS with ZERO due process!! If you give the slightest crap about our Nation, REGARDLESS of your political leanings, this should frighten you to your core. This is what men suffered, bled, fought, and died against 250 years ago!   This has gone FAR BEYOND left vs. right. This is a  threat to America, and our way of life. This is PRECISELY why Trump, a BILLIONAIRE who could have chosen to take Melania and sit on some tropical island that he could afford to buy himself and RELAX, instead chose to run for office, get hate from literally every corner of the media, get ATTEMPTS on his LIFE constantly, and begin to repair some of the severe damage that's been done to this Great Nation.   I don't know why I bother wasting my precious time here. Everyone has their minds made up. They won't realize we all were correct until it's too late ... after they elect another tyrant that hates America to office (Obama), or another puppet whose administration is secretly running the show behind the scenes (Biden).
