Remote Start Questions (adding)

Hey guys, I'm looking at adding remote start to my truck, and on the gmpartsdirect.com website it lists part number 17802087 and then it says "W/RPO code AU0, HP2"

So does that mean I need to have both of those rpo codes, or just one or the other?

I have the AU0 code, but not the HP2. So would this kit work on my truck or not?

I think long as you have one of them you will be ok. The dealer will have to program the remote start.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing to my 2011 GMC, approximately how much does the dealer charge to do the programming step? Thanks.

I added it to my 2011 Silverado. The dealer charged me $85 saying that it does take almost an hour to flash the computer. I am sorry how do you charge someone that when they bought a $40,000 (Sticker not actual price paid) truck and a traverse the week prior. I think it is BS but oh well its installed and love it. My OnStar app for my phone finally updated and now I can remote start the truck from anywhere.

Besides paying the dealer to program the computer is there anything that needs to be installed to add this remote start to my 2011 GMC? From the GMpartsdirect website it looks like all you get is a new key fob with the remote start button.

The kit ALSO comes with the "secret code" that the dealer uses along

with the Tech 2 machine to activate the auto start function in the vehicle.

If you buy the GM Accessory remote start kit, the kit comes with the calibration release information so there is no charge for that but just the tech's time to do the reflash itself.

I had the factory remote start on both my 2007 Impala and current sierra. I just had the normal remote and the range was so poor tha tI had to be within 20 yards of the thing to get it to reliably start. By then its almost not worth it. So had the dealer install an aftermarket one brand name Autostart which like some 2000 ft range. Iv been able to start my truck from some crazy distance and with some very inclement weather including ice fog which is notorious for signal distortion. This is my second unit on two GM vehicles and living in arctic conditions they are worth their weight in gold. If you have the money spring for aftermarket. Much better imo.

I never heard this complaint before now about the lack range on the OEM remote start. Has anyone else with the OEM remote start option had similar range problems? If that's the case I won't waste my money on the OEM version. :P

Do a search on both factory remote and advanced remote. This will turn up quite a bit of information about range problems. Some fixes include going to the dealer and having them mount the antenna a little higher on the back window but in the end this may net only a small difference. The advanced remote is more like a cell phone as its size is pretty significant. Aftermarket starters can be included in stock remote starters but increase range and functionality. I have plenty of experience with this first hand. When I need to start the Impala by the time I get a good enough signal that I know the starter will work and that I can see that the vehicle started I am pretty much walking to it within 20-30 yards. Granted every bit helps I guess but if I had to pay money for such a system to get such poor range I would be pretty upset. It just so happens these vehicles came with the starter as a package so it wasnt necessarily something I saved up for and spent money on.

My two way aftermarket however I have yet to have any issues of range and once it starts I get the response back every time saying its started and the countdown timer till shutdown. The OEM advanced remote is the only two way but almost all posts I have read concerning its range offers only marginal improvement at best.
