Bed Lining Rockers For Two Tone Look

hey guys,while i was changing my oil today, i noticed a bunch of paint chips at the bottom of my fenders and rocker panels, and on the front corners of my bed. now its just surface rust and i thought about a little sanding and putting some clear nail polish over the chips to keep them from rusting, but i decided i wanted some more protection. On my old s10 i sprayed duplicolor bed liner from my rocker panels to halfway up my door giving it a two toned look. i liked it alot. now im thinking of doing this with my new truck. but i dont know how far up the door to spray it. my old s10 had a body line above the emblem on the door and thats where i stopped with the bed liner spray. but these new sierras dont have a body line. so my question is, where would you guys think it would look the best to have the bed spray stop? i thought maybe below the door molding? but im looking for other opinions. ]

p.s im not a fan of mud flaps, i know they would help my problem, but i hate the look of mud flaps

I would run a tape line from the top of bumper to bumper and see what that looks like. As long as they are level I would think that would look good.

Ide say 8 - 10 inches from the bottom of the door would be enough.

thanks for the replies guys. the more i looked at it, i think the bumper to bumper line would be nice. that way i can line the bumpers as well to get rid of the surface rail rust issues.

Not a fan of it personally....but I have seen a lot of guys do it.

You can get the tintable stuff too, and pretty much make it the same color as your truck is now...few bucks more to tint it and colormatch...

It usually looks good, if you take a little time and care doing it....I just wouldn't do it on my truck is all.

thanks for your opinion, its definitly a love hate thing, some like the two tone look others dont. i dont mind it. my thing is that it has to be done, i already have a bunch of rock chips with bare metal showing and rust forming. and i dont see the point in having a body man repair it and paint it when its going to do it again.

i called a local spray on bed liner place and they quoted me $600 to do both sides. seemed a little high to me. plus i wanted my bumpers sprayed also and they said they could spray over chrome cause it wouldnt stick? sounds fishy.

the nearest rhino liner dealer is over an hour away from me, and i didnt want to drive that far, but i gave him a call anyway and he quoted me high at $450 for both sides. but he said he could prolly do it for cheaper. and he also said he could spray my chrome bumpers for 100 a piece or less.

my last choice is using duplicolor bed spray, i used it before and as long as its prepped right, it will stick and last. im thinking this might be the route i go, but ill def take pictures.

do you guys think 600 is on the high side? what about not being able to spray over chrome bumpers?

Line-x can be $700-800 for a bed and over the rails around here. Rhino lining is somewhat cheaper but both get expensive when you add the fade resistant option.

I think what they're getting at is that they wont warranty it on the chrome bumpers.

I think if you get the duplicolor one, the roll on type, and pop a nice tape line on there, you'd be doing it cheap and looking professional. If you prep the bumpers properly it should stick well...I have seen it done a few times. Most guys I know hit the chrome with some steel woll or 400/600 grit paper.

I find people forget the old 32ft per second that acts on everything on earth...they end up spraying too thick...but a roller works very well, and gives a nice texture too. But if your handy with a spray bomb....

Yeah I can see why your doing it man... a G-note to paint and in a few months it will be looking like it is now...that gets expensive fast.

if i decide to do it, im going to try the roller this time, and see how it turns out.

im just afraid to pay the local guy here 600 bucks and have it not turn out how i wanted it done. this way if i do it myself and i mess up, i can only be mad at myself and still have a few hundred left in my pocket lol

Absolutely man...600 bucks for that is BS

You can take your time, and get into all the nooks and crannies too...like your wheel wells, and even give an extra layer around the places it chips now.

hah i think 600 is more than fair... when you screw up or it peals off i gurantee it will be three times as much to fix it, not to mention the do it yourself never looks near as good as a professional spray does. just go in there an dlay out the tape lines with them and see where they tape off the truck at...

I got my bed sprayed for 350, from the guy the dealership uses. So I think 600 is way overpriced, and they wont do the bumpers for him...but the guy an hr away is quoting 450 or under with the bumpers sprayed too.

well after much research and working over time, i decided to have my rockers and lower doors sprayed by the local guy in town. i talked him down on price a little bit. my truck goes in next week to get sprayed. he is doing a tape line from back bumper to front bumper and everything below the line will be sprayed black. he is also removing my door moldings. so ill post pics when its finished, should be next wednesday night.
