2011 Parking Brake Pops Off

Recommended Posts

11's have the push on push off type parking brake... Mine keeps popping off unless I stab it hard with my foot (I'm going to bend / break it at this rate and its getting worse IMHO)

Anyone else having this problem? Dealer looked at it at last service and said it was fine and sent me on my way.. said I need to stab it hard. (never had to "stab it hard" with all the other cars I've had with this type PB, but they were cars.. not trucks)

At 28K now is the parking brake assembly a 5 year / 100K or 3/36 item?

Thanks,

I have the same type parking brake in my 2010 and it engages at the slightest touch and doesn disengage unless I press my foot on it. You should not have to "stab" it for it to work, and it should not just disengage by on it's own, something is wrong. I would suggest trying a different dealer since yours is no help. Is your parking brake cable adjusted properly? If not, this may be a problem.

Try going out to the dealer's truck lot and check the parking brakes on them. If none of them are like yours, bring the service mgr out and tell him that you want yours to operate like the ones on his lot.

If he refuses, ask to see an area rep. Then call customer service at GM.(it's in your owners manual) In other words, be a pain in their a$$. If none of the trucks in their lot do it, then why should yours. Tell him to grow a set and tell his mechanics to fix it!

Mine doesn't always catch either and the local dealership says there is nothing wrong.

I use mine everytime I park the truck, and I can apply it as slow as I want and it will stay engaged. Sounds like the OP's parking brake assy has a bent detent lever (or what ever it is they use to hold the parking brake on).

Thanks.. back to the dealer I go...

Blackz71 - Good call I will ask about the cable adjust - the pedel does travel farther then when it was new, about half way down instead of a quater down.

redsled - your right, when new the truck did not have this problem... it started about 10K ago and was rare, now its about every other time I use it. Good idea dragging the manager out, shame customers have to do that.

timdan - I will keep you psoted on what the dealer says.

Dealer confirmed... its broken. I guess the ebrake is a one piece assembly and its on order, should be back to new when the part comes in.

Redsled - it had to be confirmed by a GM certified mechanic it was bad, the manager and service rep both tested it and it failed but we had to wait for him to confirm it... sheeze looks like it will be 3 trips to dealer to get it fixed...

I've had this same problem. I had to take the service writer out to the truck to show him. He tried to say it was the way I was pushing down on it and letting off too fast. I made him get in the drivers seat and do it. It didn't do it. I said shut the door, it did it. He ordered a new park brake assembly.

My dealership is turning pretty shitty. Everything is "that's the way it's supposed to be".

I have a case opened with GM customer service now on a couple of items. We'll see how this turns out.

The parking brake on GMT800s has a release handle. However, I have the push to release parking brake on my other GM vehicle. No malfunctions yet, but I do not like it. The one with the release handle is much better IMO.

I think that GM switched to the push to release type because it is cheaper.

Wow, you got the service writer to approve it!... I had to have him, the service manager and the GM Cert Mechanic say it was bad (2 trips so far, once the part comes in 3 trips to swap it out) before it would be an approved fix. Dont they realize the guys and gals that work 6am to 6pm 6 days a week are the ones that can afford new trucks! (thank god I have a job!).

not likely cheaper. Chrysler switched to the push on/off style in the 300c/Chargers in 2007 the 2005s and 2006s had the cable release.. I replaced my cable release unit in my 2005 300c with the push on/off unit (which surprisingly was a plug and play replacement) and the newer style was nearly double the price of the older style.

the change was more likely a result of safety testing.. in a run away car situation you cannot push on and release a cable driven e-brake safely, the push on/off style you can.. with a single foot as opposed to brake on lean forward pull cable brake on, lean forward pull cable.

the function of the newer style allows for a pumping action to help control a run away vehicle, I would be more inclined to believe the change happened because of the retarded Toyota owners and push button start and sticking drive by wire throttles and no ability to stop the car..

just my opinion though.

Not sure why they swapped to the push on push off... if they snagged the part from the car / minivan line I agree its a $ thing, but I got the impression its a truck only part when they ordered it and its on back order. Anyone know why the change? Safety? To me its one more part that feels like a Mini-Van part (yikes!).

Ryanbabz71 - Old habits... I've always used it... makes it nicer getting the rigs out of park on the steep hills we have around. My dad on the other hand... never used one and I dont think he has ever lost a rig down a hill.

I agree I used the p-brake everytime I park, old habit from driving manual transmissions most of my life..

my AV has been at the dealer for the past 3 weeks with an electronics issue, as such I have a rental, a 2011 Caddy CTS-Coupe. It has the most useless and I suspect over priced p-brake system I have yet encountered. It's Electric.

push a button (while stepping on the foot brake) and a motor engages the p-brake. push again (foot on brake again) to release. Does not allow for e-braking at all (will not engage if the vehicle is in Drive) it will engage in Neutral if the vehicle is going under 2mph, over that it will just flash an idiot light..

it's a nice feature, but useless IMO.

now my 1985 Ford Crown Vic.. push on, and vacuum release when vehicle put into drive and a manual lever if the need arises.. 26 year old vehicle and the p-brake has never failed and it doubles as a correct e-brake as with the vehicle in drive the pedal won't lock, but you can hold it down to slow the vehicle.

sometimes, newer isn't always better.

parking brake? I have used mine 1 time in 20K miles :P

I use mine nearly every time I park. I want it to be there when I need it and I hate putting all that load on the park pawl in the tranny.
