Which Tuner Actually Works? Speedo/ Odomoeter Correction

Recommended Posts

Getting new wheels soon( as soon as they are in stock) and looking for a tuner that I can use to correct the speeometer and odometer with. I was going to get the diablo sport predator, but after reading through the forums on thier website, it looks like alot of people are having trouble with them..

Can anyone here reccomend a tuner that will do what I need it to do???

Thanks.

What year truck do you have? I used a predator on my 08 and then switched to a Black Bear tune. Predators have limited capabilities when it comes to making corrections to speedos, etc. And they have NO transmission tuning capabilities at all. Justin at Black Bear can take care of anything you need and I highly recommend him. Be aware that depending on the year, changing the wheel and tire size will result in ABS, traction control, and stabilitrak issues that can be very difficult and expensive to resolve.

I am going with 20" wheels on 275/55/20 tires... Shouldnt be far off from the stock tire size..Just alot less sidewall. I'll email Black bear to see what they can do..

Any idea on how much a tune like this( speedometer and odometer correction) will run??

There's no problem with Preditor sport. I owned one. It worked :fume: Also, 275/55r20 is a stock size so you really don't need to do anything.

Blackbear is better and you'll be happier overall in the end.

so 275/55r20 will be the same height as the stocker 16" wheel and tires that came on the truck?

Very close depending on what tire

example.

265/65r16 = 31.65" diameter

265/65r18 = 31.56" diameter

275/55r20 = 31.90" diameter

So no correction needed :fume:

265/65/16 is 29.6" diameter but a 265/75/16 is the same as a 265/65/18.

Here is a site that you can use to see the difference is tire size and height compared to what you have on the truck now.

I had a speedo change and used the Superchips programmer and it was close but not precise. Had Justin with blackBear do the change on the PCM and it was spot on.

This sounds like the way I'd like to go.

Does this require removing the pcm from the truck and shipping it to Black Bear?

I had the AutoCal and Justin did it via e-mail for me. If you want a custom tune, you pay a deposit, they send you a device to record your stock program, you drive around gathering the data with the device hooked up to your truck, you download it to your PC and e-mail it to Justin for tweaking and then he sends the program back with the modifications for you to load onto the handheld device and then onto your truck's computer. Then you can take a data log of the new program to send to Justin just to make sure everything is working as intended and ship the device back to him. If you want a replacement PCM, I think there is a different process and I am not familiar with that. A lot of the guys on here recommend in person tunes as well. Good luck. Definitely the way to go. I would guess the tune including the change for the tire size is probably around $250-$300 unless you want a spare PCM to house the stock program in case you want to switch them out. I just used the AutoCal to return the truck to stock if needed. It was around $549 but I don't have to swap PCMs or anything..

The Superchips programmer takes your stock program off the PCM and replaces it with their "generic" program based on the options you choose (i.e., gear ration, tire size in height, etc.) the AutoCal overwrites the program on the PCM so you ahve to keep the stock program and others on a laptop or home PC and can move them from the PC to the handheld anytime.

If you are using stock size tires that were available on your truck when new, the dealer will change the setting for you, and depending on your relationship with the dealer, he may even do it no charge.

What the dealer will not do is change axle ratio settings. They can't do it themselves on current model years, it requires them to call the GM Techline. GM Techline will not give them the changed axle ratio setting. That requires someone like Justin at Blackbear to make the change for you.
