Need To Free Up Memory On Computer - Any Computer People Here?

I am trying to install a program on my laptop but it is saying that I do not have enough memory. The largest programs that I have on my computer is iTunes and Firefox. I don't have many pictures or other random things on it and I deleted any unnecessary programs and files that I don't really need.

It says that I need 512 MB of space but that I only have 502 MB of memory available. What can I do to get the available memory that I need?

Welp if your computer can handle it, you need to go to a computer store to buy some more memory. Take the computer with ya. They will tell you if it can be upgraded with more memory. Some computers are so old that they won't handle more. Best Buy is a good place to start if there are no other decent computer shops near by.

memory or hard drive space?

Memory can't really be freed up, you need to add more memory chips to the computer.. no idea what you are running, but if you have vista or win7 you want AT LEAST 2gb of RAM; your computer will run 5 times faster than it is with 512mb.

just based on what you posted it sounds like you have 512mb RAM and are using 10mb for shared Video RAM, (uses the mother board memory for the video RAM, instead of the video having a separate RAM spec).

post up your model computer and it will help figure out your needs.

but this isn't a "space" (Hard Drive, i.e. installed programs) issue, it is an issue with lack of RAM (buffer memory).

1. download ccleaner

Install (only 30mb or so) and remove all of your old .tmp and junk files.

2. Run defrag on your PC/laptop

Step #2 will take a long time but this will free up enough hard drive space to install your app.

not going to help if it is a lack of physical RAM..

Im an IT guy and Old Chevy Dude is right on.......Its not Hard drive space which is basically storage capacity, its RAM, or random access memory that u need. Its what the pc uses to run programs. Think of RAM as a mechanics work bench......Right click on the MY Computer icon and left click "properties" Towards the bottom it will show you how much memory you have. Windows XP can use up to 3.25GB for ram as it is only 32bit. Windows vista and 7 as long as it is the 64 bit edition can use 16G. Ungrading ram from 512 to 2GB on XP will make a world of difference. Hope I didnt confuse you......

A little late but if you're running Win 7, you can use the ReadyBoost feature by adding a flash drive equal to at least 4 times your present memory. Plug in and dedicate the use of the flash drive to exclusive use by ReadyBoost and the system will use this extra memory instead of having to write the overflow to the hard drive and then retrieve it back. It helped my desktop a lot (works on laptops, too).

If you want to find out how much more ram you need to install, go to Cruical.com and run their system scanner and they will tell you what is installed and how much more you can put in. Memory is cheap and an easy upgrade.

no doubt, I just went from 4gb to 16gb on my laptop for $89 from newegg. Also adding 2 512gb SSD drives my Windows 7 x64 Windows Experience Index rating went from 5.1 to 7.2..

These SSD drive SCREAM, my boot time from power on until I was able to actually do something in windows went from > 2 minutes, to 46 seconds..

I like my PC again, been using a mac book pro at home for basic internet and email because it boots up so much faster. Now my PC kicks it's ass.
