How would i go about removing the 100mph govener on my 2003 gmc sierra 1500? do i have to have a chip or could i just wipe the computer?

A custom tune from Black Bear Performance or maybe a handheld tuner.

Actually, most start out with a handheld tuner of some type, then upgrade to a custom tune. So, if your just looking to raise the speed limiter, then most handhelds will do the job. If you buy used, make sure you get one that was returned to stock. Otherwise your getting a paper weight :)

What years/models are limited? Have you tried to go over 100mph to see if it was limited? I ask only for 1 reason. I do not drive much over 75mph ever. But... my cousin said something about all gm's being limited to 100mph. On a trip to Florida earlier this year, late at night with no other traffic around, I floored my wife's 05 Yukon Denali XL and reach 110mph very quickly before letting off because I started to catch up to a few vehicles. She was pulling strong and I don't know what the 6.0 would have reached but I had proved my cousin wrong and the was my only purpose (not to see what she could do top speed). I have done nothing to my wifes truck so that is why I asked my 2 questions at the beginning of this post. Again, I dont drive much above 75mph and dont think going over 100mph is smart. I just wanted to see if my cousin was right and he wasn't.

Best I knew all GM trucks stopped at like 95-97 MPH, excluding SS trucks of course.

I can't even imagine wanting to do that. If a person were in an injury accident at those speeds and it was found that they purposely by-passed the limiter, I could see a person getting hard jail time.

there is different speed limiters on different trucks.

The speed limiter placed on the truck depends on the tires the truck came equipped with from the factory. The maximum speed rating may be higher than the limiter, but the limiter will never be higher than the speed rating. There is other factors that determine the top speed a vehicle can handle such as suspension and aerodynamics.

from Wikipedia:

Speed rating

Code mph km/h Code mph km/h

A1 3 5 L 75 120

A2 6 10 M 81 130

A3 9 15 N 87 140

A4 12 20 P 94 150

A5 16 25 Q 100 160

A6 19 30 R 106 170

A7 22 35 S 112 180

A8 25 40 T 118 190

B 31 50 U 124 200

C 37 60 H 130 210

D 40 65 V 149 240

E 43 70 Z over 149 over 240

F 50 80 W 168 270

G 56 90 (W) over 168 over 270

J 62 100 Y 186 300

K 68 110 (Y) over 186 over 300

Most trucks came on S rated tires and will cut off for 112 mph. Most luxury sport sedans come on at least an H rated tire.

this is a trick i have seen but some times it works and others it does not. un hook your battery and let it sit for 15 or 20 min. then hook it back up and go out and drive the piss out of your truck. a friend of mine told me about this, he did it and now his truck does not cut off at 95 and it also shifts at 6 grand. i dont know for sure if it will work but its free and worth a try. i had an 03 2500 with the 6.0 in it. i had a hypertech hand held for it. i was always messing with it i messed with it a little to much i guess. one day i put it on a 97 octane tune and raised my shift point to 6 thousand and when i red lined it in first it would hit the rev limiter one time before shifting. now i know this isnt good for your truck but it sounded really good. after that i was afraid if i messed with it again i might not be able to get it to that again so i left it that way and thats the tune that was on it the day i sold it.
