'01-'03 you're going to want to make sure that they have had the updated injectors installed. Other than that, a maintenance record of oil, fuel, air and trans filter changes is an extra plus. Best year D-Max's for just everyday use. Best years to mod, as well but 9 for 10 you won't need it. Out of the two that you listed I would go with the '02 if you can afford it. Other than a maintenance record a normal used vehicle inspection for oil leaks and the such should find anything you might need to be aware of. Solid trucks that will last for years and years, if taken care of.

Absoluetly..there things to watch out for! another good reason to stick with a bulletproof 8.1,

Any 01-03 lb7 has Injector issues, anywere between 90-130,000 the truck will need injectors

which will cost you $3000-4000 depending were you go..

I also agree with the guy who mentioned guys buying diesels for no reason..just to play and abuse

them with there buddys, AGAIN the 8.1 is way mor capable than people realize..especially

if you get justin from blackbear to play a little with a tune! You will gain MPG,S and do even better pulling.. BBC all the way

Also a truck should be gauged and purchased to do a/the job not for gas mileage..

Want mpg,s..buy a honda civic

?? He's driving 35k to 45k miles per year. It matters a lot...

i get the mpg thing but you have to find a balance if it was 10 k a year then ity wouldn't matter. But it does

Stevens: nice link

I did consider the repair issues with a diesel and the $$$$ leaning heavily on a gasser. Figure 6.0 or 8.1 wont matter if the truck is the right one

Seems like now its going to be doing the research on the mpg on the 6.0 vs 8.1 I found 1 dually and need to figure out how much more it affects the mpgs. all others are crew short beds or extended long bed srw

If you only knew how many low to mid mileage 8.1's that I've seen get long block assemblies due to oil burning.

The LB7 injectors were covered under warranty for over 100,000 miles, and still are. Very few failures of the updated injectors on file and most of those were from running garbage fuel and not changing the fuel filter on a regular basis.

And hey, the pulling power and gas mileage of a diesel isn't for everyone, that's understandable.

What do you mean by "get long block assemblys.."

Long block assemblies = Complete engine assembly. Plenty of history out there about 8.1's being oil burners, take a look.

01-Early 03 wear the oil users.. My 05 doesnt use a half of a qaurt in 4-5000 miles, daily driving and pulling trailers/camper..

How many post '03 Duramax's do you hear about with injector issues?

Look dude, I get it, you don't like Duramax's which is odd because if I remember correctly, you were asking me all kinds of questions about them and I thought you were looking to buy one as well, not too long ago. Either or, no matter to me but to say that an 8.1 can do the job of a Duramax and have all the same benifits while doing it, is assinine, honestly.

Can the 8.1's pull? With an Allison trans, hell yes but they are only going to get sub 10 mpg doing it where a DMax will pull it better AND get better mileage doing it, loaded or unloaded, PERIOD. It's apples to oranges bro and if you can't see that then enjoy your 8.1 but don't try and sway honest people with biased, unrealistic ideas.

For cost alone, and the way that you intend to use it, go diesel. You will not come out ahead with gas at that many miles/yr and towing that heavy. Resale on the diesel alone will almost compensate for the upfront cost difference, and mpg difference will cover repairs/maintenance. Maybe the net cost difference wouldn't be much, but you're an almost perfect candidate for diesel. Semis run diesel for a reason: lower cost @ high mileage and heavy loads (which is how you plan to use it).

No question, for a tow rig, diesel is the only way to go. Get a Duramax, tune it, and see great MPG's along with unmatched pulling power. Don't fear the diesel. It will save you money in fuel and be worth more when you sell it.

big problem for the diesel for me at least is the repair cost and lack of diy repair. I am not knocking them or there performance but if/when it breaks its big $$$$$ if I am not mistaken. Yes gassers do break but the repair costs are not nearly as steep.

I definitely appreciate hearing all sides of this as its a debate as old as the first trucks.
