Man killed in afternoon crash

By Ryan Palencer CNHI

PLAINFIELD — An Oklahoma man was killed in a Thursday afternoon crash at the 66.4 mile marker on Interstate 70 near the State Road 267 overpass.

Steven Akerman, 36, was driving a 2010 Chevrolet pickup truck when he struck a Freightliner in the rear. The Freightliner was driven by Richard Lee Bollinger, 53, of Missouri.

Bollinger was driving in the middle of three lanes on I-70 westbound. The traffic in all three lanes was moving slowly, due to traffic being merged into one lane about two miles west of the crash for a construction zone.

A witness told Indiana State Police officials that Akerman was driving about 60 miles per hour and did not brake or attempt any evasive action before hitting the truck.

The trailer was carrying about 40,000 pounds of sugar, which was not compromised.

Akerman was pronounced dead at the scene by Joe Neuman, Hendricks County Coroner.

The driver and co-driver of the semi were uninjured.

According to state police, all lanes of I-70 westbound were diverted to State Road 267 for approximately three hours while the investigation and cleanup occurred.

Should read, "The pancaked body that was Akerman was pronounced dead at the scene by Joe Neuman, Hendricks County Coroner."

My mother was killed in exactly the same manner when I was 10-years-old (she was driving a '53 Studebaker). I still have nightmares about it to this day and I'm in my 60's.

Why doesn't that trailer have a crash bar on the back? Its a law here in Texas to have it...

That's a good question. Horrible accident. A bumper at the right height on the transport truck, and he would have probably survived... rather than totally missing the frame, and pushing the engine bay through the cab.

Probably because when the DOT pulls trucks over they don't worry about things like that, they like to nit pick about stupid shit.

It probably "Did". You wouldn't expect a crash bar to withstand the impact of a 6,000# vehicle hitting it at 60MPH, would you?

Look at what happens to highway guard rails when they are impacted at much lower speeds.

I don't w about it being a law (I believe it is here in indiana) but I have never seen a semi without one so I assume it was knocked off in the crash

I wonder if it would have been just as bad with on older chevy truck like 90's model and below. I once wrecked into the back of a van that was almost completely stopped going 40-45 mph and all that I ended up replacing was the front clip that was hardly messed up at all. I know I was going around 20mph slower but still those trucks back then seemed stout IMO.

I'll bet the van that you hit didn't weigh 10 tons and wasn't carrying 20 tons of cargo...... That's like hitting a block wall. The guys in the cab of that truck probably barely felt the impact.

the DOT bar (Department Of Transportation) is required on all trailers. also almost every state, and DOT has a min/max bumper height requirement to avoid accidents like this. when i was towing, we had quite a few like this, and almost all the DOT bar was heavily damaged , or ripped off the trailer. the bars are pretty tough but 6,000 lb plus truck @ 60+ mph the bar will not survive..
