Never had a problem with over penatration using a .45 Hollow Point. Never used a 9mm Hollow point only standard FMJ military grade ammo. They do have issues with over penatration, and as for stopping power, I wish Uncle Sam kept the .45 colt 1911.

These are all good suggestions I should have stated the purpose of the gun. I have a Sig .40 for carry and truck duty and S&W 10mm I hunt with. I went ahead and bought the Colt combat elite 1911 mainly for a bed side security blanket, range practice and I beleive any red blooded American should have one.

I'll 2nd that.......... Mine came from my dad that had it in WWII.

mine came from my grandfather in WWII :) i have not shot it, and i have no plans of getting rid of it any time soon.

i traded for a springfield XD 45acp a few weeks ago, and i fell in love with it. i like it well enough that i would like to get a XD .40 and a XD .9mm to match it, and if i ran into a decent deal on one, i would pick up another one just like it.

I wouldn't carry a 45. If (God forbid) you ever had to use it, you'd better know what is inside the building behind the target that you are about to shoot.

That's why a 9MM HP is a common carry weapon. Decent stopping power without traveling through 1/2 a city block of buildings :) ....... Easy and light to conceal.

My Ruger P95 is a very nice, concealed weapon.

Do you research guns at all beyond what idiot movies lead you to believe? 45 isn't some magical round that will rip through the bad guy and keep going. Most any pistol round in hollowpoint will not overpenetrate and a heavy and slow .45 absolutely will not.

No I am a novice in the purist sense of the term.

What I do know is that when I go to the shooting range (in the mountains), I usually go through about 500 rounds with my 9MM because that is the weapon that I would most apt to have on me if I had to use it.

I also go through about 100 rounds with my 45. If I hit the 2x4 mounting frame with my 9MM, the 2x4 will sometimes stop the bullet. If I hit it with the 45, it will blow through it (sometimes blowing it apart) and hit the hill behind it with pretty good impact. Every time that happens, I think about that happening in a building....... that's why I brought it up.

If a bullet were to hit a building, chances of hitting the frame of the building are slim. Most likely, the round would go right through the siding and the drywall of several rooms before stopping. The guy that I go shooting with is an Inglewood Vice Officer. He carries a Glock 9MM as his service weapon. He has all kinds of horror stories about bullets going clean through buildings and sometimes hitting people inside..

Now, having said that, I don't usually target practice with hollow points.

I've seen first hand that being a police officer doesn't automatically mean you're a gun expert. I know several officers who are, and seen enough whose gun handling skills indicated they obviously weren't. Plus, you're in CA so they probably make all officers spread lies about how evil guns are or some other lame crap to allow the libs to push their agenda. :)

I'm about ready to turn in but google "box o truth". Guy sets up wood, drywall and other barriers and does penetration testing with all manner of gun/ammo types. Lots of neat info.
