Looking to buy a .45auto pistol looked and held both of these (colt/ruger) today side by side. Both feel like excellent built pistols and of course the Colt was 200 more. Do any of you guys have one or the other or both and care to share your thoughts. I've always wanted a Colt but I see the Ruger has alot to offer also.

I have the Ruger P345 (45 Cal) and the Ruger P95 (9MM).

They are both small, light weight weapons. The P345 has a lot less recoil than my old Colt 45. I can fire 500 rounds with either weapon without ending up with a sore wrist. They are easy to disassemble for cleaning and plenty of safety features.

Be sure that whatever you get, it has a rail for mounting a laser site.

What is the primary purpose of this gun? If it's just a range/target/fun gun, then both are great (obviously). However, I wouldn't recommend a 1911 for self-defense; choose a different modern service pistol instead (like the ones listed in the above posts). I know, I know, I probably just started the 1911 vs. everything else debate but let's try to keep it on topic guys. (I base my opinions on real life experience, so don't think I'm just "assuming" based on what I've read.)

I looooooooove 1911s but I have to agree that there are some better choices for carry. For range/comp shooting you can't beat a 1911 though IMO. They also make the best gun porn.

I'd have to agree with a few of the other guys. If you are looking to carry concealed, there are better options out there. Both guns your talking about weigh almost 40 oz before even being fully loaded. Both are top quality guns. If your looking for a range gun, go with the Ruger and use to money you save to buy more ammo

Personally, the gun I carry concealed is the Ruger LCR .357. Light weight, easy to conceal, plenty of stopping power. The great thing about the .357 model is that you have to option to run .38 or .38+p rounds. The Hogue grip the gun comes with is very good at absorbing the recoil when firing .357 rounds. When I carry, I keep it loaded with .38+p Federal hyda-shock 129 grain hollow points.

Sig P220. a little big but I have never had any problems with mine

Highly recommend the P220 SIG Sauer, I won't knock the others mentioned because I just dont have much expierience with them. I have a few friends that traded out of a 1911 after shooting my P220. Get a good belt if ya plan to carry one of these tho it'll pull your pants down

I wouldn't carry a 45. If (God forbid) you ever had to use it, you'd better know what is inside the building behind the target that you are about to shoot.

That's why a 9MM HP is a common carry weapon. Decent stopping power without traveling through 1/2 a city block of buildings  ....... Easy and light to conceal.

My Ruger P95 is a very nice, concealed weapon.

I agree with the other posts asking what the intended purpose of the weapon is.

I carry a Glock 27 in .40 very reliable and small.

If that is your purpose I wouls also look at Kimbers offerings. The new Kimber solo in .45 is really interesting

If your looking for a carry gun, take a look at the Kahr CW-45. I love mine for a ccw.

I would agree with the Kahr CW series. I bought a CW9 2 years ago and liked it so much I bought a CW40 this spring. They are very light and thin, so easy to conceal even in summer wearing just a tshirt. I have put about 1000 rounds through them with only 2 jams ( both with the cheap blazer rounds). I would also recommend the Springfield XDM40, very accurate, will shoot anything you put into it and can find it for around $600. Its a little harder to conceal but if you were looking at full size 1911s this should be no problem.

These are all good suggestions I should have stated the purpose of the gun. I have a Sig .40 for carry and truck duty and S&W 10mm I hunt with. I went ahead and bought the Colt combat elite 1911 mainly for a bed side security blanket, range practice and I beleive any red blooded American should have one.
