A good rebuilt trans will run you 600 or so without a core charge. And if I'm not mistaken I believe both 4l60s and 4l80s will try to start in first even if the truck is manually put in second. The manual shifting on an auto tranny simply keeps it from shifting up, not down.

You definitely need a shop to take a look at it to determine the problem. You don't want to buy a new trans if the problem is simple, yet you don't want to waste your money on parts when the trans is toast.

Do a search for "Rebuilt transmissions". I doubt that you will find one for $600 (at least not one that works). ALWAYS replace the converter when replacing the trans..... so price a converter too.

I would spend a few $ and take it to a local transmission shop before I dropped $1500 in a rebuilt. You'd feel pretty foolish if the problem ended up being a simple one.

The other thing to consider is having your own trans rebuilt. If there are no hard parts broken, it could be cheaper than buying a rebuilt. The problem with buying a rebuilt is that you may be inheriting someone else's problems. Rebuilders will often just replace seals, gskts and clutches and send the thing out the door. If it comes back, it's no sweat to them. They just give you another one until you get one that works. If they do find a broken hard part, they don't put in a new part, they put in a part out of another trans (most of the time). That part probably came from a trans that was so badly trashed that it couldn't be rebuilt and could have 300K miles on it. They disassemble those transmissions and salvage the hard parts that "appear" to be good. It doesn't change the fact that they could fail next week when subjected to the stress of a tightly sealed trans and a motor that has more HP than the vehicle that had that part before.

If you have someone rebuild yours, they are more personally accountable for the rebuild and will be a lot more careful about inspecting every part that goes back in the trans. If they find a broken hard part, they'll put in a new one (at your expense of course). After-all, if there is a failure, he's gotta do it all over again on his own time.

BTW.... my 4L60E also starts out in 2nd gear if it is manually placed in second (unless I floor it)..... I'm just curious.... Have you tried flooring it from a stop to see if it drops into 1st?

As a chevy tech who has done a lot of 4L60`s, i would say your sprag is no good. easy repair if you know what you are doing. but with the miles on your truck you are better off swapping out the trans for a rebuilt. if you get a serta from gm it will come witht the converter.

I would listen to this advise ^^^

I've pulled and worked on many transmissions and I can tell you that this thread started off with a crap ton of bad advice.
