General Motors has confirmed that its next-generation of Gen-V small-block engines will come equipped with fuel-saving direct-injection technology. The engine tech should also be good for a few extra ponies.

“The Gen-V small block is an all-new, state-of-the-art engine family that will offer more efficiency and refinement than any other small block in its more than half-century of production,” said Jordan Lee, chief engineer. “For customers, that will mean cars and trucks that deliver more while using less gas to do it.”

GM has yet to release full details on its Gen-V engine family, but it is believed the unit destined for the Chevrolet Corvette will displace 5.5L. Although smaller than the Vette’s current 6.2L Gen-IV V8, the new mill is expected to match or exceed the car’s 430 horsepower rating.

GM has already committed $1 billion to build the next-generation engine family, with that investment expected to create or retain 1,711 jobs. However, the Detroit automaker isn’t committing to a solid launch date, saying only that the “Gen-V small block will go into production in the near future.”

From what I've seen/heard of them, I think people are going to be impressed with the Gen V GM V8 engines. I wish I knew more so that I could comment more on the CK2XX's as well (because that's where you're going to see the Gen V's the most) but that program is about as tight lipped as it gets. There were nearly more spy shots and info out about the Camaro than this truck and that bit of info in itself, is kinda sad if you think about it for a minute.

LOL I hope the next gen Silverado, Sierra will be excellent and take down ram and f150, but im not sure at this point if it will.

Based on my experience with the 3.6 in my wife's Traverse, in conjunction with a few things I've read, I'm not so sure SIDI is a good thing. Among other comments, I've read it's harder on motor oil than SFI, and my personal observation so far supports that. Haven't had a UOA done on the 'Verse yet, though.

I'm lost..........So what you're saying is that you can visually tell that the oil has been abused more with SIDI without having a UOA done? Interesting......... :bs:

Visually, I'm seeing darker oil on the dipstick earlier in the oil/filter change cycle than usual; my one retired brain cell, coupled with past experience, equates that to contamination. But we shall see what the UOA has to say at the one year change interval (~3k miles).

My brand new '11 6.2 Silverado dirties oil up in less than 500 miles from an oil change. Changed oil at 3,000 and 6,000, used Mobil1 5w30 for the first change, with a Delco filter, and found the UOA results to show not one issue what-so-ever. While I might have been told for years, as well, that black oil is dirty oil, it seems as though UOA results do not completely agree with that and I'll take science over what my grandpa told me, anyday.

Completely agree as to the importance and significance of the UOA. Have also been using the UPF ACDelco oil filters since my LS1 days; I do think they do a hair better on the filtration side than the standard line, which is already more than adequate, IMO.

That is the only AC-Delco filter that I have, and will run, on this vehicle. I use Puraltor Gold or Wix instead. The ACD filters have been missing some serious filtering ability for about 6 or so years now.

I hope they do enough testing before placing these engines in new vehicles. The engines in the Colorado/Canyon had all sorts of issues the first few years. That is what I have read anyway. My 2010 has had zero issues.

And I change oil every 3,000 miles and the oil never gets dirty.

Not to hijack any more than I already have, but any opinions on magnetic oil pan drain plugs on these motors? I've used them since my LS1 days, too.

GM has never taken any chances with their modern V8s. They'll never come out and say it openly but the Vette and F-bodies were really just a test bed to make sure the engine design was good before putting them in their #1 product. I've heard rumors before that GDI engines are harder on oil, no idea if it's true but I'll take increased service costs all day long as a minor issue. The excellent throttle response, increased fuel efficiency and HP vs. size are too good to let something minor keep me from it. I haven't driven many GDI engines but the best example so far was a new Sonata- a tiny 2L 4 cyl. 200 HP! VW had to turbo their 2.0s to make that power. And the Hyundai has serious low end for a 4 cyl too- my rental would light up the tires on highway ramps. And when I wasn't messing around on the drive from Detroit to Toronto, I got better than 40 MPG.

as technology advances their is always a few bumps in the road....i remember reading that the direct injection in the suv's had bad carbon build up problems...but i'm sure by now they have fixed the problems...and alot of you folks make direct injection sound like carbs from the 70s lol

I am wondering if the next V6 engine for Silverado, will be based of the 3.6 or will it be based off the generation V small block V8? Maybe it will be based off the 6.2,like a 4.7. Just wondering, like hear from you.
