OGM1 with covert medialink install

Here are some links to information and parts that I used to jumper the OGM1 medialink to the factory usb, move it to the upper glovebox, and separately mount a jumpered aux connection that retains ipod video while hiding the medialink pod inside the dash. I spent a lot of time researching options to cleanly mount the medialink, but really wanted my truck to look as stock as possible and I did not care for the look of the medialink pod.

 

Now my truck stays clean because there are no wires for gps, phone, ipod, etc from the dash. The ipod is hidden and my phone charger is powered from the socket under the center seat.

 

Here is a pic of the finished product in the upper glovebox. The ipod touch fits perfect lying flat on the left side of the glovebox with just a mm or two to spare. I cut a piece of black drawer liner to fit the bottom of the glovebox to prevent the ipod from moving at all.

***Disclaimer… this setup does work for ipod video and I am satisfied. However, I found that the video will drop out momentarily if I manipulate the aux connection at all while the video is playing. I attribute this to a loose connection, but do not know if the jumper harness, the jlink, or the female to female connector is at fault.

I found a picture of a factory USB and aux port on a corvette forum. The part number they gave is 20870101. There is also a picture of it. It's a flush mount rectangular module that would look perfect in this location. Did you look at that part?

Did not jump on this part because the aux needs to be a 4-pole (3 stripes on the 3.5mm jack). Since this aux connection is made for audio pass-through, I believe the conductor would be in the wrong position.

Just edited my post and saw yours. What your saying makes sense. I wonder if there's a way to get the proper aux jack fitted in to that adapter. I like that module look better than the round one but I certainly likd the location of yours.

I actually tried spraying that connector with plasti-dip to conceal it better in the glovebox but the application did not come out very clean so I removed it :D

Lol, well either way it definitely looks much better than the media link taped to the dash somewhere! Not to mention a second 12 volt outlet on the dash

Looks like this might be an option if you don't mind soldering. Get the snap in jack and the six foot cable and you can shorten the cable to a few inches to save space behind the glove box.

After reading a couple of the links above, I took a look at the schematic for the Camaro USB/AUX jack:

It's got a total of five pins in the plug - 1,2,3 & 5 are audio left, audio right, audio ground and AUX detection respectively. Audio outs are straightforward, and AUX detection is just passing a ground signal to the deck to tell it when there's a plug inserted so the deck knows to let you choose "AUX" as a source (100% certain it's connecting pin 3 with pin 5 when the plug's inserted).

 

What intrigues me is that there are a total of two pins that would not be used in a "hacked" non-GM installation using this plug: pins 4 & 5. Pin 5 "could" be used for video ground (since the audio and video grounds are commoned in the plug anyway), so all we need is to see whether pin 4 corresponds to the fourth ring on the 3.5mm male plug. It almost wouldn't make sense for GM to source a non-standard plug to use in this case (I know - it's GM...), so with a little rewiring on the back side of this factory jack, we could potentially get everything you'd need to make it work.

Just got off the phone with my local dealer. He said that item in black is item number 25832461. He can have it it 5-7 days for just under $20.

Already on order. Worst case, I drill out the aux port and put one of the snap-in 4 pole connectors I referenced earlier.

    • Hey guys, sorry for the confusison about this. This wasn't my experainnce, it was copied and pasted fom the net. 
    • The problem with failure rates or increase failures are there’s people who don’t have a problem. What are you doing wrong they say. We had 4 5.7 GM diesel’s in the family when they came out. One was flawless. My uncle who happened to be the most abusive. Early rotary engines were known to use oil. I abused my first car so bad in six months I replaced the clutch, transmission and rear end. It didn’t use oil. My brother in law has a 2013 Tahoe and an older Yukon. The Yukon has 280K miles. The Tahoe around 175K. He runs them to about 300K. If his lifters fail before that time he would consider it a failure. My Hondas, I know people hate it when I mention them. Identical engines. One with cylinder deactivation one doesn’t have it. One shudders when the eco light goes on or off. Cylinder deactivation. But wait! According to the web. It can happen with lock up too. So now people in the know are changing the oil and transmission fluid more often. Then you read it could be a programing issue. So what do you do? There’s lots of money involved. I see three ways to deal with it. One only works if you don’t drive lots of miles. Lease, never get out of warranty. Or only buy older vehicles with a good track record. They all have bad runs. Usually when there’s a change. Even Toyota and Honda. 
    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.
