Armor All deterioration rumor

Recommended Posts

i've heard using armor all on the plastic interior on the dash and such can cause it to deteriorate the plastic. Something to do with the sun drying it out and the chemicals in it? I'm not sure. Anyone else heard of this?

I have heard that. My results have not shown any ill effects however. I've been using Armor All since the 80's on nearly all of my vehicles. None of them have had any deterioration. I just sold my 1990 Chevy SS pickup a couple of years ago. Truck had been stored outside for the majority of her life, and the interior plastics were the only things not weathered. The seats were faded badly, and the clearcoat paint was shot.

I'll continue using Armor All as long as it's on the market.

pretty sure thats not true... a lot of people dont like it because its thick and kinda slimy but it does last the longest and it makes plastics look good

works great as tire shine too

Looks good until is washes off from rain, then your plastic looks drier than if you never had any on. That said I use it too but heard the same things.

I have a Four Wheel Camper with pop up vinyl sides. The manufacturer recommends and includes http://www.303products.com/ with its campers. They also specifically warn against Armor All. 303 protectant works great and gets excellent reviews.

Google Armor All problems and damage for an afternoons worth of reading.

Here is a quote from the FWC owners manual:

"A protective conditioner, such as the “303” product (www.303-products.com), may be applied to the vinyl surface (pop-up material), both on the inside, and outside of the liner. DO NOT use any water exclusion products, such as “Armor-all”. These oil-based products can damage vinyl. Product 303 conditioner also works well with all the rubber seals for the doors, vents, and windows. Don’t forget the rubber insert for the door stop. Product 303 can be purchased from Four Wheel Campers or from most auto parts and Marine Supply shops."

I used Armor All for years on the dash of my Toyota, F-150, and Jeep, and I had no problems with it. I'd say my dash looked better than most other ones out there.

Alright, I have been using Armor All as well, but I heard a few rumors about it and didn't want to run into problems later from it. Thanks for the input though guys

Think about it......ArmorAll has bee naround for a long time, would they still be able to sell a product that causes damage to your vehicle?

Use it and don't worry about any negative rumors.

if i remember some time ago, there was a class action law suite agenst Armor All for damaging products that they said was safe to use on..well they lost. will not use there products..

I also used it for years, the older stuff had no UV protection built into it which over time lead to overheating in the sun and eventuall dry rot, also the old stuff would freeze in extreme cold and would help aid in the cracking of vinyl. Also as someone mentioned above when it gets wet it makes a mess.I now use Meguiars Supreme Shine,it's cheeper than armour all,its not greassy, dust dosen't stick to it,it smells like coconut, and a little goes a long way,one bottle will last forever!! It also has UV protection built into it,and the finish result is way better than armour all,and it dosent get messed up after a little rain gets on it,and you will not have to re-apply as often to maintain shine.Seriously guys give it a try,I guarantee you won't go back,I know I never will.

ArmorAll has been around since the early years because there were virtually no competitors. ArmorAll brand became almost as famous as Scotch tape. If you put that stuff on a crappy GMT800 plastic dash then let it bake in the sun it's just the perfect recipe for peeling the fake dash OEM paint. So, ArmorAll still has a loyal fan base from those that don't have access to Adams or poorboys. Even I use to use ArmorAll only products before I got my yd xl, hopped on these GM truck forums and learned about the good stuff...

I had a service guy at the dealer tell me that every dash on the gmt-900s that he has replaced, has been due to greasy substances like armor all :dunno:

25 years ago Firestone released a bulletin to all their dealers warning against using Armor-all on tires. If a customer brought a tire in that obviously had been armor-all and was complaining about sidewalls cracking, the warranty claim would be denied. Not good for leather as well.

Years ago Armorall formula had a lot of alcohol in it, which caused drying. In combination with the heavy amounts of silicone used it was a combination that would (over time) dry and cause cracking of interior plastics. They've since removed the alcohol content, but its still VERY heavily silicone based so it puts a nasty, sticky shine on everything. You want to use a water based product for cleaning and conditioning your interior, not silicone, and something that finishes with a matte or factory look, not an oil slick - simply b/c your dash can cause glare/reflection and be a legitimate driving hazard.

FWIW - our stuff is all water based, our Leather & Interior Products work on both leather seats, as well as interior plastic, vinyl, etc.

Its a 2 part system... 1 product for cleaning, 1 product for conditioning/protecting. Beware anything that claims to clean and protect in one step... it may do both, but given the opposite nature of the 2 processes it likely won't do either very well. Additionally our Leather & Interior Conditioner has SPF65 the highest UV protection we know to exist in such products. This means excellent protection for your dash and interior against sun fade and UV damage. All made in the USA (bottles, caps, and sprayers as well. Not just the chemical like many companies)
