10W30 in a 2011? Seriously?

it may have started in 2011 and newer vehicles but my owners manual says nothing about dexos, and I have a 2011 truck, whose to say I run any oil that meets gm6094m (which is just about all of them), and say I didnt Know any thing about dexos never heard of it, the dealer never told me and my owners manual doesnt say anything about it, it flat out says gm 6094m, there is no way they would be able to prove I new about dexos and intentionally used the oil i felt like using, thus keeping my warranty.

This vehicle was filled at the factorywith dexos?approved engine oil.

Notice: Use only engine oil that is approved to the dexos

specification or an equivalent engine oil of the appropriate

viscosity grade. Engine oils approved to the dexos specification will show the dexos

symbol on the container. Failure to use the recommended engine

oil or equivalent can result in engine damage not covered by

the vehicle warranty. If you are unsure whether the oil is

approved to the dexos specification, ask your service provider.

 

Use of Substitute Engine Oils if dexos is unavailable: In the event

that dexos?approved engine oil is not available at an oil change or for

maintaining proper oil level, you may use substitute engine oil

displaying the API Starburst symbol and of SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade.

Use of oils that do not meet the dexos specification, however, may

result in reduced performance under certain circumstances.

 

Viscosity Grade

SAE 5W-30 is the best viscosity grade for the vehicle. Do not use

other viscosity oils such as SAE 10W?30, 10W?40, or 20W-50.

(?20°F), an SAE 0W-30 oil should be used. An oil of this viscosity

grade will provide easier cold starting for the engine at extremely

low temperatures. When selecting an oil of the appropriate viscosity

grade, be sure to always select an oil that meets the required

specification, dexos.

Dexos came from GM now sourcing their cars on a global level. They are now using engines in the states that had been in use in Europe (1.4LT on Cruz for instance). European oil standards have been higher for years. They needed a standard they could use globally. Hence they did the dexos thing. As far as propietary is concerned, there have to be 100 oils that now meet Dexos specs. Just look at the list. I always find it fascinating that people think they know more than the manufacturer about what oil should go into their truck. It says Dexos 5w30, so that's what it takes. Mobil 1 5w30 fits that bill. Lord knows that was the oil half of us were using anyway.

yea your right, but of those 100 or so, theres only 3 that are easy to come by, (you know for those us of that do our own maintenance),

mobil 1, penzoil platinum, quaker state ultimate durability. I had no idea about dexos untill i got to this forum, my first oil change I went off of the owners manual (use only gm6094m, blah blah blah), and it just so happened to be dexos approved, now Im more "educated" and use only dexos approved oils>

Last time I looked at my owners manual it stated that 10w30 was an acceptable weight oil and is especially in the summer or southern U.S. I don't see why this is such a big deal.

With all of the "it doesn't matters", how many of you change your sythetic oil @ less than the oil life monitor?

who uses oil life monitor ? I thought that thing just went off of KM or miles. I just change my oil every 5000-8000 kms

I still like I change mine at 5000 km. I use full syn. I see the oil when it comes out then and it's pretty dirty, so hopefully in the long run, keeping the oil fresh, keeps the engine running strong.

Gotta love Wally world. But my buddy works at a Canadian tire oil change spot and he always fill with full syn... I pay for the cheapest stuff... Always works out to be cheaper and I don't have to lift a finger!
