10W30 in a 2011? Seriously?

To be honest, I ran 10w-30 in my blazer just cuz I had extre oil around and it had no problem in the -25 C weather... But it should only do good for a state that rarely sees a snow flake.

You really over reacted and wasted 6 qts and a filter. Like has been said. 10W30 & 5W30 are interchangeable. My cousin who is a mechanic uses either or on mine depending on what he has and time of year. As long as the dealer is using a comparable oil it should be fine. I just looked up this dexos crap. Sounds like another proprietary scam by the manufacturers to get you to buy their product only. They pulled that crap with dexcool until Prestone came out with it's version. The new oil is for CAFE mileage numbers and emissions. All part of the "Big Picture" in keeping the eco-nuts happy and preventing them from banning our trucks as a crime against Mother Earth! :bs:

as far as the waste of oil and filter, maybe he shouldnt have drained it out, but i could see how he would be upset over the dealer not using the specs put out for the engine oil of the truck, i highly doubt the 10 30 would have led to engine faliure, but come on the dealer is very picky about appointment times, "limited warranty", and a bunch of other bs the least they could do is do the job right and to standard.

Gentlemen, I have a different opinion.

 

With the exception of two of you, you're driving vehicles which don't have AFM...we all know the problems these engines are encountering thus I'd rather be safe than sorry. The minute I have a problem with the engine and go to Champion, all they have to do is say I didn't use Dexos 5W30 as stated on the receipt. I asked the Service Manager if they would change it immediately and he said they could do it in a week but they were booked. I make more than enough money and it was much easier to "overreact" and do it myself then to have a severe overreaction in 50,000 miles when they tried to screw me out of a warranty repair on an engine.

 

By the way, I did go in yesterday afternoon to present my receipts and they generated a new service receipt indicating they had filled it with 10W30 and "customer replaced 10W30 and filter installed by Dealer with factory approved 5W30 Dexos oil and PF48 filter". A little peace of mind is well worth the $35 for oil and filter.

 

P.S. I do believe this is a huge scam propogated by GM to raise additional funds by the "Dexos" oil that is sold but unfortunatley I knew about it when I bought the truck. If I didn't like this fact I could have bought a Dodge or Ford but I'm sure once they see the cash GM is raking in with this scheme, we'll have "Ram Tested Tough" approved oil and "The Guy who Does Dirtiest Jobs and Also Promotes Ford Vehicles" approved oil!

5w30 is thin to begin with and only gets thinner.

 

 

Then why is it what the owners manual and gm calls for

 

 

the oil is 30 wt when warm, the only difference is 5w-30 is thinner at startup.

I do not have AFM - Thank Goodness!!!! But, I do live in Arizona where it gets quite hot in the summer, and never gets to a hard frost in the winter. I use 10W30 Pennzoil Platinum in the truck and my wife's Lexus ES350 and 10W30 Pennzoil Ultra in my Lexus ISF. I want a little thicker oil on startup. I did notice when my wife's ES was new there was valve clatter on startup, after I did her first oil change, that clatter went away and has never returned.

While I can see your point upon further info and your explanation, I still don't see how they can deny your warranty on oil that they installed? What was the rating of the 10W30 they installed? If they put this in all their customer vehicles, then all those vehicles have a voided warranty now? I would call GM then and get their view on their dealer.

I still get 19 hwy and 15 around town. As for protection. My used oil analysis show the same protection as running a 5w-30.

The diference will not be noticable to the end user, but, every tenth of a mile per gallon in the grand scheme of things is noticable. CAFE numbers are for the entire company. GM needs to sell more compact cars to offset the truck sales to meet CAFE numbers.

 

As for the DEXOS thing, it was something GM marketing dreamed up. They needed a way to bring in money on a regular basis. Charging a fee for allowing an oil company to put a logo on their can of oil does just that. Every can sold sends money to GM. Nothing but a money grab. Doesn't GM have to prove the "unapproved" oil caused the damage? And what do you do if there are no DEXOS oil products in your area? There a lots of small towns and large empty spaces up here. If I cannot find DEXOS oil, am I supposed to take my truck to the nearest dealer, regardless of how far away that may be?

Last time I looked at my owners manual it stated that 10w30 was an acceptable weight oil and is especially in the summer or southern U.S. I don't see why this is such a big deal.

what year did this dexos thing start?

 

 

 

It started with 2011 and newer GM vehicles.

 

 

I like my 2010 :) haha such a gimmic.
