nothing had a stronger exterior then the GMT400, when i had my 400 i hit everything from trees to trashcans and the bumper never budged, same with the rear bumper. The GMT800's were a little bit weaker, and the 900's are the weakest. obviously saftey standards have changed, but there has to be some compromise. hopefully the next platform isnt another downhill step

I've never mic'd the sheet metal, but I can tell you with a 400, 800, and 900 sitting at my house, the 900 is the thinnest. 400 is stronger all the way around like stated before.

We had 800 series work trucks at my previous job and the 900 series IMO is an upgrade by far. I just broke 30K miles on mine and have only had to have a door lock actuator replaced under warranty along with a door handle striker pin. Lint cloth seat covers were my decision to upgrade. I would like to have had the 6L80E but my tuned 4L60E does just fine for my needs. My LY5 AFM 5.3L is a fine engine that uses no oil and has no ticks.

Owned both, and the 900 is better @ 4 yrs & 40k miles than the last 800 was. All the comments about a thin bumper "fascia", but no mention of the fully boxed frame? Yes, the metal is a bit thinner, and the paint isn't as tough, but the crash test ratings are *far* superior to the 800's, from every impact direction. I could care less if my bumper survives a tree at 5 mph without denting, but I care a great deal whether my family is protected from someone hitting me at 55 mph.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the 800 trucks. If they fit my needs/wants/budget better, then I'd probably have one. They are my favorite "past generation" body style, but that's a personal preference. My favorite "all time" body style is what I have now.

After spending a lot of time behind the wheel of a 2011 LTZ CC, I can tell you the 900 series trucks are much better than the 800 series trucks. I drive a 99 Silverado and the new truck is just so much easier to drive. I even felt like it was easier to park because of the tighter turning radius. The truck I drove had the 3.08 gears and 5.3, it not only felt stronger than my 99 with 3.73's but it returned over 5 mpg's better. The fully boxed frame is the biggest improvement to me. It's a very rigid and strong hauling platform that I feel makes hauling and pulling much safer.

I love my 99, but I'd love to be able to afford a 900 series right now. Especially a 6.2.

Very true. I pulled the same camper with both the 800 and the 900, and noticed the difference right away. I also like the fact that the rear drums actually hold the camper+truck combo on a hill, where the rear discs on my 800 wouldn't. I don't have a strong preference of rear disc vs drums, but the 900 system is better than the 4-wheel disc system on my 800. I'm sure the 2500HD 4-disc system is even better, but those also use hydraulic boost vs vacuum on the 1500s.

It will be even thinner according to the recent data. That is to boast mpg apparently.
