Buying/Ordering new GMC truck, but split between two dealers.

Getting close to ordering a new GMC sierra STL,

A lot to type … but here goes,,,, try to follow…..

Dealer #1 is about 4 miles from my house. ( as in … if I ever had to take the truck in for service, I could ride my bicycle home)

Also, a friend’s mother works there as the greeter / customer service person part time, she dropped my name to the sales guy.

The sales guy I’m dealing with is …… um….. ok. Let’s just say I know more about the truck then he does. Last week, took my 04 Silverado in to find out what they give me on a trade,

Dealer #1 is currently at $8150 for my truck, and I can’t really explain it thru typing it all on here, but basically they looked at my truck, this is what we’ll give ya, I’m not finding anything on the lots, we do a search, nothing I like comes up, so we go thru the “Build your Own Truck” web site and it spits out a price.

So he goes, ok $8150 off for your trade, $2000 in GM customer cash/rebate…. Here’s your number.

Kind’a like….. no more , no less. I leave.

Dealer #2

#2 is about 15 miles. ( a bit far for a bicycle ride…well, for me away)

A girl / lady sales person is assisting me, very pleasant, has some knowledge about the Sierra’s and trucks in general, seems to know a little bit.

Take my truck in, they’re going to give me $10,000 for my 04. (wow… some difference)

We do the same thing…. Nothing on the lots, do a search, so go thru the Build A Truck with her.

After that comes up, She proceeds to explain to me all the offers, rebates/ incentivizes, we discuss possible GM card top off….. kind’a what I wanted to here. Like she wants to get the most off of the truck that she can find.

So, not ready to sign just yet,,, I say I’ll get back to you.

Now… just yesterday, I get an e-mail from Dealer #1 , basically where do you stand with ordering a new truck. I reply back saying I want to order soon, but another dealer offered me a considerable more amount for my trade.

Now, today, I just got a reply saying that Sales guy talked with manager, and seeing you know Mary (Buddy’s Mom) we don’t want to lose you as a customer.

I’d like to buy from the closer dealer, Dealer #1 , and will probably will go back to see if they can do better on my trade in amount, but dealer #2 is saying all the things I like to hear and just kind’a get the impression that she’ll willing to work for me a bit more… as far as rebates/incentives.

And as of yet, no contact from Dealer #2 since I was there last week.

This is the first time buying a GMC, so I have no idea how the Service Dept's compare.

This truck buying process is a pain.

What do you guys think….???

First, the bottom line IMO is price. If they want your buiness they will do what ever it takes to be the lowest. Second is the service department BUT even with that you don't have to buy there to get them to service your truck. You could try to do a google search for reviews on them. I bought my truck out of OHIO because the locals would not deal around here. I am in VA. No matter how nice they are it really depends on how light you are willing to let your wallet to be after the purchase. The truck will be the same either way. Work them back and forth until you get a deal you are happy with.

Buy the one with best deal, after that go to what ever dealer u want for service

Take what Dealer 2 is offering you in way of service, price, etc.. go back to Dealer #1 and let them know. See if they will compete. Be very nonchalant and if they say "no", basically say "Well, I'll just go to the other dealer then, Thank you" and walk away. Almost guarantee the guy will try to deal. Get him where you want to be, or, worst case, he lets you leave, and you go back to dealer 2 (which was ideal in the first place) so its kind of no-lose for you.

If you lay what you want on the table, and throw in what Dealer 2 is saying, and Dealer 1 doesnt want to play ball, then do you really want to buy from a dealership that doesn't care if they lose a paying customer? Remember: YOU'RE giving THEM the sale. Not the other way around. There will ALWAYS be another dealer to sell you a truck. However, YOU are putting money (salary) in the dealers pocket.

Also keep in mind how they've followed up with you after the sale. Someone that's quicker to follow up with you is someone's that a little more eager to earn your business. Not just this time around, but in the future as well. A salesman can be the nicest person in the world when you visit, but if they don't follow up and keep in touch, then they aren't too terribly concerned about taking care of you as a customer.

Go with whoever gets you the best deal. Drive 3 hours to buy a truck if it gets you a better deal. Most of us drive far to get our trucks.

Don't worry about the sales person. Either they have what it takes to work with you on price or the competition will bet them out. After the sale is over you will most likely never talk to the sales guy/lady again unless you trade often.

Sales and service departmart have nothing to do with each other IMO.

Going thru the e mails I got from dealer #1,

Does this guy know what he talking about.....

"we have always talked about getting you a GM Supplier number and that does not work with a normal GM card.  "

I work for a GM supplier and if that's right, I can't use my GM card with the Supplier Discount ?

Is he right?

At the end of the day take the deal that keeps the most money in your pocket. Seems like dealer 2 is sounding right and now a days I remember the horror in trying to trade a vehicle because of the low amounts offered. If you're getting that much for your 04 then take the deal. Service where you want but IMO I typically service my vehicles where they're bought from since I can always say when there's a problem with it that I dropped a ton of cash to buy it there. I drive to a different city to service my truck and I'm telling you GM is stepping it up this dealer has gone out of its way to help me every time. Hope to see your new truck soon.

When I bought my Silverado, I was looking at several (GMC and Chevy).

Went to the first dealer with the title for my trade, and a pre-approved, blank check from my bank. Spoke to the dealer, and told him I want to give him my car and a check in exchange for the truck on his lot. After putzing around for what seemed like an eternity, explaining that I did not want to discuss payments, undercoating and a free cell phone offer, I got a number out of him.

Seemed high, so I went to dealer #2, same thing, when he asked what number I was looking for, I told him to do the best he could do, but I was not going to wait for him to go talk to the manager more than once. Came back with a number, $4,000 less than dealer #1, signed the papers and left that evening with the truck. Both dealers were out of state.

As I was driving off the lot in my new truck, Dealer #1 called me to see how satisfied I was with my experience with them....

Go with the deal that takes the least amount of cash out of your pocket. I never buy a truck without checking with at least a half-dozen dealers. Consider...

1. Whomever you work with as a sales person probably won't be there when you go back to buy another vehicle. Auto sales is an extremely short-lived career. If you do your research, you will probably know more about the vehicle you want than any rookie salesperson. The salesperson is only an necessary means to an end... spending the least amount for the vehicle you need.

2. Dealership service departments ask for business. They do not care if you purchased the vehicle from their sales people or not. I travel a lot and spend considerable time away from my home base. I always use GM dealers for all my service work, since I don't know "Al" or "George" at the local repair shop. With the exception of one dealer, I have always received excellent service from GM shops. Purchase from where you get the best deal. Service where it is convenient and professional. The two are not connected.

Good luck!

Yeah, keep it simple. Go in with what you want for your truck, and what you want to pay for the new truck. Be prepared to walk away. If they want the sale, they'll call you back. Be firm.

have you built the truck you want on gmc.com? after your done building it, and your on the summary page, click view inventory and expand the radius if you have to. dealerships do dealer trades all the time, if you go in and show the dealer that another place has the truck you want, but its too far away for you, they can always trade their inventory for it. its faster than building and waiting 2 months!

maybe go into dealer 1, talk to the sales manager and see if he can redirect you to a more helpful salesperson!
