OnStar phone app

Hey everyone,

I posted this in the electronics forum too, but for extra exposure I thought I'd toss it in here as well. I need help!! :dunno:

So I signed up for the free OnStar trial today and downloaded the app, mainly so I could play with it. I can lock and unlock my truck fine and get all the information about it that OnStar relays to my phone, but the remote start function doesn't work. My truck has the AP8 RPO... with that said, I assume that means that with that and TPMS it should work. And it kinda does... it will sit there and think, locks the doors after a few seconds, and then the parking lights come on like they're supposed to but within a second they go right back off and then my phone tells me:

Could not start your vehicle.

Remote start is not allowed when your

keys are in the vehicle and only two

remote starts are allowed per ignition

cycle. (220)

And neither of these things are the issue. One key is in my pocket, the other in my wife's purse, and we're both in the house looking out the window at it when trying to get it to start. I've gone out and started it with the key then tried the app again to eliminate the latter issue but still, I can't get it to work. Does it absolutely have to have the AP3 upfit for it to work, or is it just not wanting to cooperate with me? I've looked all over the place both here and on Google and I can't find anything about it other than one other person asking the same question which remains unanswered. Anybody got any ideas? Am I just SOL without AP3? I don't see why the feature would show up on the app if my truck didn't have the right options to support it. I've even uninstalled the app and re-registered my phone with no luck.

It's a 2011 Silverado built 4/11 so it is definitely new enough to support the feature, so that's not the issue.

AP8 is the remote start prep package. AP3 is the remote start feature, if you do not have RPO AP3 then you do not have remote start.

Do you have the remote start button on your key fob it should look like this.

If it looks like this then you do have remote start and I have no idea why it wouldnt be working. If it doesnt have the button above the lock/unlock then you do not have remote start and need to add this feature.

Excellent! Thanks Ryan... I wasn't sure as I'm new to this truck. I came out of a 90 and it had NOTHING this fancy. I'll check with the dealer about getting the AP3 upfit; I'd like to have it. I just didn't understand why it would try and then decide it wouldn't work all of a sudden. Thanks for the help!

To add it all you need is the kit and a dealer program should be around $200

I bought the key fobs from the dealer and had their service department install it. It was about $300.00 for all of it took about 1 hour or less. It now works great, and the first op that is what the phone told me before I had the install done. Just go ahead and spend the extra money and you will not look back, the range on the phone is unlimited I think, with the fob you really just about need to be able to touch the truck. :jester:

A build date of 4/11 does not guarentee that the app will work. It should but vcim software usage was sketchy at that time. My truck was build 4/22/11 and I was told that it probably wouldn't work but it does.

Again though, Ryan nailed it. If you don't have remote start on the truck, the app isn't going to start the truck for you.

Range on the phone is unlimited. One of the other guys from work left for a trip later in the week when I was already somewhere hundreds if not thousands of miles from home. He sent me a text saying he was parked near me so I started the truck. A minute later I got a "how the hell did you do that?!?!" text back.

I had the AP8 code on my truck, bought the keyfob kit and had it programmed by my dealer. The onstar app did not add the remote start function for me. I see it hit or miss on having the app work after adding the remote start, from this thread: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=133755

I really was hoping for it to work, but I guess it saves me $18+ per month for the onstar service.

2012 should work. My RVS was the GM Accessory install as well, in my '11 and it works flawlessly. I was told, by my Onstar guru, that it has to do with what software version the vcim is on and most '11's have it so I would assume that all '12's have it. :dunno:

Don't ever be a few hundred miles from home, truck left in the driveway, drinking with your buddies and turn the panic alarm on at 10-11 pm at night though. Let's just say that my gf was less than impressed........LOL!!!

I called my Onstar guru, and he basically told me it isn't allowed with my truck. Has to come programmed for remote start from the factory. I told him that I have seen reports that it can be done. He had no reply other than it wasn't allowed.

From the thread a linked to in my post above, it seems that those who got it to work have 2011's and myself and "Redone" both have 2012's. Looks like something in the vcim programming is different for 2012's.

Well, I decided to open the onstar app again today, and what do you know it now shows the "remote start" and "cancel start" options. I guess I will test it out to see if it works. Looks like it just needed some time to refresh?

I had a 2011 Silverado which did not have remote start from the factory. I had my dealer install the factory one. After about a month after the install it showed up on my onstar app. I think it was shortly after my monthly vehicle diagnostic that was done. All I know is that about a month or two after the install it worked from my phone. I suggest either just hanging in there a little bit longer or call and ask onstar to do a vehicle diagnostic so that their systems can update.

Not really what's being asked here, but I figure I'll throw this out there so people are aware...

If the truck is parked longer then 48 hours the remote start feature will not work until the truck is started with the key again. I work in a remote area and my truck is often parked for a week at a time. I was disappointed to find out that that feature is basically useless to me when I'm coming back home.
