mikeyob Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 I just bought a 2005 1500hd with quadrasteer about a month ago. Reading other forums I was under the impression that ever 15,000 miles I should take that in to get looked at, adjusted, whatever... Exactly what needs to be done with it? I contacted my local GM dealership and they have only worked on 1 before...should I be concerned with this? approx how much should this cost...
music Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 (edited) I looked at one last year. My reading led me to understand that the QS diff fluid should be changed every 15k miles, and that's it. The fluid is special, however, and using the wrong stuff will cause problems (chattering). There's a special GM fluid, but I recall some folks having made their own using aftermarket + friction modifier in the right ratios. Unfortunately, there aren't that many QS trucks/burbs around, but I recall http://www.denalitrucks.com/ having more folks with them. Edited March 26, 2012 by music
ChevyTech77 Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 (edited) I've worked on literally, hundreds of Quadrasteer trucks. Yes, every 15k the diff fluid should be changed. I have only ever used the GM fluid but from what I've seen it is just a GL-5 gear oil with friction modifiers in it. The only other adjustment is setting the rear toe which should be done during any wheel alignment. Oh and btw, if the rear steering gear does go out (and most always do sooner or later) there is not a replacement made for them anymore. Edited March 26, 2012 by ChevyTech77
mikeyob Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 if the rear steering gear does go out...then what can they do?
ChevyTech77 Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Set the rear wheels straight and power it down. That's it. The rear wheels will stay straight as long as you don't hit something with them sideways, like bumping a curb. I've heard of some guys just pulling the rear steering axle right out of the truck and swapping a standard axle into it's place, as well.
MikeNH Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 That is surprising considering you can get parts long after a model stops being made. I'm guessing this supplier went belly up? Probably the same thing with the supplier of the retractable roof on those Envoys. I heard that venture killed the company.
ChevyTech77 Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Belly up, you say? Not really. Well, kinda. Quadrasteer supplier = Delphi.
11c Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 (edited) Rear steering gear...... I was just looking at buying a '03 Denali or a Silverado with quadrasteer, so if I can find one of these gears I guess I should buy it for back-up, what was the cost??? I find it strange that they stopped parts availability for a vehicle only 7 years old (based on the '05 Quadrasteer). '05 was the last year for that system correct?? Edited September 18, 2012 by 11c

Believe what you will but yes, there is no parts availability, from GM anyhow. 2005 was the last year, correct.
Spurshot Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 I thought there was a federal law about maintaining parts for 10 yrs? Old wives tail?
MikeNH Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 No laws but that is generally what manufacturers do anyhow. In this case, I believe the supplier went under so that is why there are no parts. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Spurshot Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Bummer, a co-worker has a Q-steer truck. He really likes it. Wants another. I guess it was just too costly and not enough sales?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk The supplier went into bankruptcy protection but never went under. The plant, and company, are still going to this day but were bought out and changed names. Not enough sales, correct but in all honesty, I believe that was the marketing division of GM's fault not the supplier.
Daryl LBZ Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 I almost bought an 04 Quadrasteer back in 06, but passed because I wasn't sure about problems it might have. Sounds like it wouldn't have been a bad truck to have unless you need new parts for the rear steering.
SarahsGMC Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 i too almost bought a quadrasteer but talked myself out of it because it seemed like one more thing that could go wrong
