Im gonna change the filter, gasket and fluid on my transmission. Does anybody have any advice on what brand to go with. I went to the dealership and they quoted me $56 for the filter and gasket. I personally think that way too expensive. Has anybody used wix or duralast tranny filters and gaskets? They run around $15-20 price range. Still undecided. If you guys have better recommendations let me know.

I just did one and I too thought the dealers filter and gasket were expensive so I went with wix. I will admit though, when I saw the the rubber gasket I immediately went to the dealer and bought me an ac delco oem one it's a felt one. Don't really trust that rubber, and sure enough no leaks.

I never thought about that. Ill certainly get a ac delco or similar quality gasket. Thanks

Changed mine with a Wix filter and used the rubber gasket. No issues at all. Just don't over tighten the bolts and you will be fine.

i am an OEM whore ..

 

i love the quauilty and trust all gaskets and parts and ive seen jobber crap parts with a felt seal instead of a boot for all MOOG frt end parts ,no threads in lower ball joints for grease nipples,,,just crap

 

phack i hate jobber crap ,,

Is there a whole lot if difference in a high mileage atf and a synthetic blend atf? My truck has 130,000 miles and Im not sure on which one to go with

yes ,,,,the cost ,the aftermarket loves you guys

 

ok,in a nutshell,this is how your tranny works....

 

first off,Darral said in another thread that tranny oil does not breakdown like engine oil from combustion ..

 

the oil is pressurized and applies a MECHANICAL CLUTCH PACK by a hydraulic piston locking it

 

oil pressure also moves servos to apply a MECHANICAL BAND to lock up a drum

 

alot of shit goes on to make you travel down the road smoothly,

 

yes there is debris that collects in certain spots but WILL NOT PHACK YOUR TRANNY UP ,

 

simple thing to remember is ,if you follow a basic advice and change the filter and oil on a schedule based on your driving habits ,it will be fine ,,,,,however if you are dumb as a sack of hammers and rat bag the tranny ,it will fail happily,

 

the aftermarket wants your money and will take advantage of you thru shear ignorance on your (people in general) part (ignorance meaning not knowing how things work) they will scare you into buying it ,,,,,,

 

this is my take on it ,,

 

the trans cooler flush machine at GM dealers is for the cooler ONLY and is used for clearing the cooler and measuring flow thru the cooler for a successful rebuild or a replacment of a tranny

 

we never ever sold a trans system flush ,because the machine wasnt bought by dealers ,only the garages that wanted to sell the crap service

 

dont get sucked into the hype is my last comment

One thing to keep in mind, servicing the transmission not something you do after the fluid becomes real dark and stinks. The old fluid is likely holding the trans together. Changing the fluid will clean all the varnish out and pressure seals will start to leak.

dark oil is the fiber material from the clutch discs or bands

 

when the material is gone and piston /servo reaches the end of its travel ,the transmission slips

 

dark cooked oil doesnt hold the tranny together and there is no varnish inside because no combustion ,its hydraulic oil not engine oil which does varnish up after awhile of abuse

Then what was the brown translucent stuff I had to wash off on just about every trans overhaul I did? You do not need combustion to varnish inside the case. Change the fluid when it is like that, and the new trans fluid will disolve that brownish stuff. That brownish stuff gets everywhere inside the case.

I find it hard to believe that you have not seen this happen on transmissions you have over hauled. You have overhauled them, right?
