My interview for a Ford salesman

What you wear to an interview will not get you a job, that's obvious. From reading your responses, It's your attitude that ruined the opportunity and not the brand of vehicle you drive.

Clothing has nothing to do with it. Next time, be more polite, respectful, and open minded when being interviewed. It goes a long way. You said it yourself that the HR lady was nice, be nice in return on your next interview. Think of this one as a bad practice for the next.

Also, try to act like you are interested in the job you are being interviewed for. You really should go back and apologize to her. These dealership people communicate with each other. Word will get to other dealers about the attitude & whatever else went wrong.

Remember, the people that may hire you are actually doing you a favor. They are offering you a job when they call for an interview. It's up to you if you are hired or not by your performance at the interview.

Good Luck.

A friend of mine worked at a local dealer for a few months and then he quit. He said he couldn't keep on misleading customers and telling the lies that he was basically forced to tell. He's a gear head and thought he would be able to sell some cars just with his knowledge.

I always remember one tactic that they used to use. He said they would put an add in the paper for a car with a certain invoicing number for x amount of dollars. The customer would see the add in the paper and come in and look at the car but when they got to the lot, that particular car just happened to not be there. Sometimes the car would actually not be there or it would be in the back somewhere and they would say it was sold. Then they would start to try and sell them a newer car that was more. It was jost a ploy to get the person in the dealership.

There are other stories that he told me but I can't remember most of them. He did stick it to the dealer though before he left. Ther was a truck on the lot that that showed it had a V6 on the window sticker. He got to looking at the truck and he looked under the hood and it actually had a V8. By this point he was fed up with the dealer and was going to quit anyways so he ended up buying the car with his employee discount and got the truck with the V8 for the price of the V6. I don't remember exactly what he paid but he got a heck of a deal.

That ol bait and switch tactic happened to me when I was looking at trucks, they had the same gmc I have only blue extended cab I set up an appointment and suddenly the truck sold to a "war vet" 15 mins after we confirmed my appt. Needless to say when I arrived and they told me this I was upset and they tried to get me in a 07 sierra I test drove it brought it back and named off every single flaw with the "mint" truck they tried to push on me.. they thought because I'm a girl that a big white truck with heated leather seats would change my mind.. not when all the buttons stuck the headliner was severely stained due to a leaky sunroof it was covered in scratches had rust all over the wheel wells and rockers and worn leather... I'm the pickiest customer you'll come across i so finally after embarrassing the salesman they gave me 20 dollars worth of gas and that was it.

knowledgable, because the cocky guys like that one i mentioned are annoying. the guy i bought my sierra from wasnt incredibly knowledgable but he was a nice easy going guy that didnt push the truck on me, you find more salesman like that in the smaller dealerships, when you get into the bigger ones good lord its a mess. I had one at a rather large chevy dealership emailing me over and over trying to get me to buy his overpriced silverado i finally told him i bought a newer better truck for cheaper and accompanied it with pictures so he'd leave me alone.

But would you rather have some cocky guy who only cares about a sale or someone who is actually knowledgeable

What "we" want in a salesman and what "they" want in profits will NEVER conincide from what I have seen at dealers.

I prefer a knowlegeable salesman but that means he's going to be explaining a lot of things so he doesn't have time to make multiple sales to other people to make his pay check.

Salesman who truly know their product are a rare breed and always will be now. Dealers don't want that they want guys who will sell cars and post good numbers. Every time I've bought new I went to the counter and told them I wanted to look at vehicle with stock number xxxxxx because it was exactly what I want after months of research. They can still try to play their games but I know better, I worked in the service dept of a dealer for 3 years almost and saw the same BS every day.

I managed to find a salesman that was willing to learn how to deal with me. He understands my background and my personality. I have bought every new vehicle since 1994 from him. Also sent him 9 or 10 customers since that time as well. Service department is also aware of who and how I am. Point is, find a salesman that treats you right, and stick with him/her.

I've never been a repeat customer anywhere though I wouldn't hesitate to send someone to the guy who sold me this truck. He's been doing it since before I was born and was good to work with. Though the person I got my Subaru from (the car I had before the Silvy) is gone I'd sent somone to any sales person there too- small dealer so I met all of them.

First off a sales interview is a sales pitch from the person applying for the job. If I'm across the table I have to believe you could sell ketchup Popsicles to a old lady wearing white gloves in south Florida before you are working for me. No offense but new car salesman are like revolving doors, one in one out. Product knowledge comes with time, if you are unfamiliar with the product there will always be a learning curve.

You will remember this interview when you are in the poor house and can't even bust a grand a week. Live and learn. Sometimes lost opportunities pay off in leassons learned.

I don't even make that much in a week. If you do get me a job there...

$1,000 a week working 8hrs. a day with a 40hr. a week is somewhere around only $20.00 an hour. Very realistic and on the lower side of the pat scale. Still a lot more than a car salesperson will make.

Ha not in this area. Where I work pays the best for around my area, and I make $16.30 an hour. I'm and NC Operator which besides Maintenence is the highest paid department where I work. The most you can make after 3 years is just below $19.00 an hour as of right now. Most of the other jobs in the plant pay $12 to $15 an hour. I have to work 40hrs regular time, 8hrs overtime, and 4hrs double time just to bring home $700 after taxes, and thats a Sunday-Saturday work week. :)

Pay will be all over the place depending on location and the type of work being done. I'm salary so my pay is flat even though I regularly pull more than 40 hours but if you based it on 40 I'd be around $20/hr I guess before the other pay benefits.

Yea you said it. Our Health Insurance is dirt cheap too though. The CoPay is $0, and I only pay $4 a week.
