My interview for a Ford salesman

Well, it started great. The HR lady was nice. She didn't like that I had no previous sales experience. Auto sales experience doesn't matter, they teach you and help you get your get your sales license. She started asking me questions about their various cars. I answered. Then she asked what I drove. I told her. She asked if I would own a Ford. I told her possibly and only the Eco-Boost F-150 if they didn't overcharge. She asked what my preference in trucks was and I told her I am a GM guy. That I wouldn't trade my 8 year old truck for a new Eco-Boost. She then asked what I thought about their advertising for the trucks. I said that Ford needs more truth in advertising. The truck can't get 20 MPG while equipped with the gearing to tow 11,000 lbs. And I would tell customers that.

Long story short. I didn't get the job because I love GM's and I don't think Ford is honest enough in advertising and I got up and told her "I won't compromise my integrity to sell any car or truck and this dealership doesn't sound like the place for me. Thanks for your time Ma'am, please shred my application."

...I won't compromise my integrity to sell any car or truck...

That alone should prevent you from being a car salesman at most places. Keep being honest with them and yourself.

Ill give an honest opinion even if I lose a sale. I flip cars like people flip houses. But OK for the most part we are guys and this is a truck site. I know there are a few ladies. But would you rather have some cocky guy who only cares about a sale or someone who is actually knowledgeable about what he is selling and can answer your questions without needing the brochure

So you went in and badmouthed their product and didn't get the job? What a surprise....

I've said it dozens of times to the fanboys here who think Ford is the only one with cheesy ads- GM has done the same BS in the past.

Honestly, most salesman don't know jack about what vehicle they are selling. Dealers prefer it that way.

Years ago I applied at a local Chevrolet dealer, they wanted a person to make friends with a customer that should lead to a sale.

I mentioned that a few years previous to that interview about knowing the option codes, motor-various package set ups per year. They told me to forget all of that & it was NOT what they were looking for in a salesman.

Regardless, I was hired BUT called before hand to let them know I was going to pass.

If you are flipping cars now here 'n there, do your own thing. Car sales can fluctuate dramatically with this economy & NO dealership will care if you are starving or not. The bigger a city a dealership is located in the faster the revolving door spins to get new sales people who will bring in their friends/family.

A friend of mine worked at a local dealer for a few months and then he quit. He said he couldn't keep on misleading customers and telling the lies that he was basically forced to tell. He's a gear head and thought he would be able to sell some cars just with his knowledge.

I always remember one tactic that they used to use. He said they would put an add in the paper for a car with a certain invoicing number for x amount of dollars. The customer would see the add in the paper and come in and look at the car but when they got to the lot, that particular car just happened to not be there. Sometimes the car would actually not be there or it would be in the back somewhere and they would say it was sold. Then they would start to try and sell them a newer car that was more. It was jost a ploy to get the person in the dealership.

There are other stories that he told me but I can't remember most of them. He did stick it to the dealer though before he left. Ther was a truck on the lot that that showed it had a V6 on the window sticker. He got to looking at the truck and he looked under the hood and it actually had a V8. By this point he was fed up with the dealer and was going to quit anyways so he ended up buying the car with his employee discount and got the truck with the V8 for the price of the V6. I don't remember exactly what he paid but he got a heck of a deal.

Not really sure why anyone would waste their time, and the time of the interviewer to apply for a job that they really had no intention of taking. You have to know that if you hate a car company, the last place you would apply at is that company. I am also pretty sure you knew what car salesmen typically do to get a sale.

Printed ads are almost always real close to misleading. Especially new vehicles. The ads you see in the paper are not put there by GM or Ford, they are put there by the local dealer. One thing that everyone needs to know is that ads are there to sell something, they are not there to be a good source of information.

Hate to say it, but I have a buddy with an Ecoboost F150 4x4 who is getting 22mpg on the highway, so I would not say Ford is not completely right as they are pretty much spot on with thier mpg estimates on that truck.

Tell me about it, I asked if they had any 6.2 trucks on the lot and the salesman told me GM didn't make it for the trucks!

First off I didn't bad mouth anything until it was agreed upon that I want getting the job. I had intention on getting the job if the offered. I like some of their cars. I prefer the GM truck but I like fords cars. It pisses me off that they don't want knowledge on vehicles

Can't blame her, they want experienced people who know how to sell.

So she askes about ownign a Ford and you said YES EcoBoost F-150...Then you go on contradict yourself by saying you wouldn't trade your 8 year old truck in for an EcoBoost right after you told her you would own one.

Way to blow it, you wasted their time. If you were even half serious about getting a job you would not of been disrespectful.

Since you don't own an EcoBoost, how can you be sure it doesn't get 20mpg??? NO WAY you could know that without owning one and having personal experience with it over a period of time. You go on and claim you told her that you would tell a customer that the MPG is no good, What kind of crap is that?

From the Ford forums I have been following since EcoBoost was introduced, they are definately getting that MPG and more. You loose while towing, everyone in the world knows that. They don't advertise high MPG while towing 11,000lbs....It's quite obvious you don't know as much as you think you know and it was obvious to the woman while you were wasting her time with your interview.

Ford advertising is bad? GM has some of the most pathetic commercials I have ever seen in my life. All manufacturers have some bad advertising. You didn't get the job because you were arrogant, rude, and disrespectful PERIOD!.

It's obvious by the story you told that you didn't want it in the first place. You should go back to the dealership and personally apologize to the lady for wasting here time with something you never truly intended to do. There are people all over this country that would do anything just for a chance at a job interview and you went there and acted like that? Very childish IMO, you really do owe her an apology.

Doesn't the EPA do the MPG estimates anyway?

This is just my personal thought but if I were to act like that when someone gave me a shot at a job and was conducting an interview, I would be to embarrassed to tell anyone about it.

i wouldnt go buy one. id rather own my 8 year old truck. sure id own an ecoboost. but i neither have the money or desire to get rid of my current truck. and actually i was dressed in slacks and tie, i was polite in the interview. the rudeness didnt come out until she basically told me a mechanic cant be a salesman, they rather have someone that has worked at a cash register in walmart. Id tell you where to shove your comments towards me but apparently i cant. i intended to sell cars. the lady was rude to me because of the fact that i was a mechanic in the military and after i got out. i dont have "sales" experience. I dont see why you continue to single me out for things. what happened to the statement about never posting in my topics again. those were your words, I was not rude to her. she asked my opinion and i gave it to her. when i go to replace my G6, im looking into getting a taurus sho or fusion with the ecoboost.
