Rust Stop - oil rust proofing / undercoating..???

For you northern guys, can anyone comment on "Rust Stop " oil treatment undercoating ?

Where they spray the doors and underside with an oil/ wax liquid to prevent rust.

I was considering having this done , but don't like the fact that you have to take it back every year to have them re- do it .

The shop in WNY is charging $109

Any input is appreciated .

I can comment on the process of annual rust prevention. I have an 04 sierra and have had it sprayed annually since new and frankly it still looks that way. If the intent is to keep your truck looking fresh and the undercariage limber and well preserved any of the oil based rust sprays should work. I was a faithful Rust Check customer until the local shop dropped the ball, I then turned to another local shop that used Rust Block which I found to be a heavier/waxier product that did what I saw as a better job. The important thing with these annual applications is finding a good dealer that sprays the vehicle properly, after all the product is useless if it is applied half assed. I would go ahead and try Rust Stop, making sure that it is applied properly. Note that all of these products can be messy and if you work on your own truck, prepare to be covered in oil/dirt.

Rust Check is one of the better products out there, it is thin enough to seep in to tight areas like door seams and believe it or not it actually will creep upwards.

That thick wax type under coating is pure crap in my opinion, it just sits on the surface then finally drys out and lifts off after time, I used it on a truck of mine and it was horrible.

I'm actually having this done tomorrow. They are charging 350 and it's guaranteed for 5 years. They spray everywhere. My only issue with this is it's a caramel color at first then then the mineral spirits evaporates it does turn black. In the summer it will run all over. Onto your driveway an all. I was considering having then not spray the inside of my rear wheel wells cuz they are painted an shinny as if now with no rust and still have the new truck look. Although they said if I don time it i can just use grease gone and wipe it off in that area. I also am planning on installing a lift. So I guess who ever does the lift will need a few rags handy lol

Hmm, now with the fluid film an rust check are these self use products? Or does some rust proofing businesses use these products? I'm having it done early tomorrow so I don't really have time to shop around. I'll probably just go with this method then after it wears off go with a better method.

Fluid film you can spray on yourself. In fact, I just buy it in cans and take it to the shop I go to for work and the owner lets me use the lift to spray the truck.

I got mine Krowned and it's $100 every year and has a warranty on it. The stuff still seeps out in the summer. Where I get it done the municipality does all it's vehicles with the stuff.

Well I went with the undercoating and picked my truck up today. They took all door panels off and speakers out and sprayed EVERYWHERE! They pulled weather stripping off and sprayed all doors too. The only negative I have as of now is the overwhelming smell inside my cab. It's a mineral spirits smell and he said it would go away after a week.

When I bought my truck from the dealer the complete protection package was through a company called diamondkote.com they offered the works outside inside and underneath. They sold me with their corrosion control module the technology is the same that has been used on oil pipe lines for years. and they offer a yearly service which is a complete check the whole truck and reapplication where needed. Been 4 yrs now and still quite satisfied with the products and services.

    • I recall paying $5.00/gallon in 2007 as well, although, different circumstances. A severe windstorm followed by a rare ice storm knocked out power in our region for days. We had a gas generator keeping the fridge cold and our furnace on power, and fuel stations either didn't have power, or didn't have gas because deliveries were delayed because of the storms. Driving around, we found one station that didn't have power but had a sandwich board set up out front. $5.00/gallon. They were hand-pumping it out of the underground tanks. I'm not sure that was legal or even advisable, but we needed it, and they had it. So we filled up. I was just out of college, just bought our house. Times were tight so $5.00 felt really outrageous. Local supermarkets couldn't keep stuff cold so they were basically giving food away. Fridge/freezer cases were literally being emptied out before the food expired. Never seen anything like it before, and until this day this event serves as the boilerplate for our winter storm prep.
    • Have you spilt anything on the console during ownership?  Water, coffee, soda, juice, etc.?   GM has been seeing contaminated console shift controls causing all sorts of issues.  Requires replacing the shift control.
    • If it's something they cannot figure out they can contact GM. They have a case open for noise in the suspension and my whistling drivers mirror they cant figure out how to fix.
    • Thing is gorgeous! Definitely been a LONG time since I've heard that sound!      I wouldn't call myself a purist, since I'll throw Wilwoods and power adders on anything. For me, that engine makes me cringe as a former shop owner remembering all I've been through with some of them. Plus I hate LS engines for their oiling system (MANY places to lose pressure from, especially on the AFM ones which I wouldn't be caught dead with), and the dowel-less front and rear covers - an engineering decision that irks me to no end! And I despise electronics with every fiber of my being.   My main reason for avoiding modern electronics is that when they fail, they typically leave you stranded. Tied for 1st place is also the fact that sometimes troubleshooting super-annoying problems can suck the life right out of you. I've wasted so many hours of my life chasing gremlins on those in all kinds of vehicles. I find carburetors and simple HEI style components much more suitable for keeping my sanity, lol. Different strokes for different folks. I probably get more hate from the younger crowd for sticking with my old school ways of thinking than you would for doing an LS swap.   When everything's working, they're certainly a ton of fun!
    • I have an Edge Insight CTS2 in my '04 3500, and find it works well.  Only real problem I have with it is the obdii connector will work itself free over time, so it stops working and also freaks out the trucks electronics for a bit.  Remove and plug it in and it's good to go.  More recently, I've taken to zip-tying it in place which also seems to work.
