Track days with my 5.3 Silvy

So I took my truck to the track the other night, and I ended up kind of disappointed. I ran twice. The first time was a 17.1 with a 2.6 60'; the second was a 17.2 with a 2.7 60'. I'd post the slips, but I think my wifey threw them away at the gas station we stopped at.

Honestly, I know the truck isn't one of my past DSM's, but I thought I'd be somewhere around the mid-to-lower 16's. I didn't have anything in the bed and the cab was empty except for me and my wife. She only weighs about 115 lbs. so that's only about a 1/10th of a second. I did have the spare and half a tank. My specs are in my sig. I have added a K&N, which realistically doesn't add anything, but it's completely stock other than that.

Also, I was running on 100% 93 octane gas, so no crappy E10.

If nothing else, I guess I have a good baseline to start working from. I'm going to order a Blackbear tune and a set of long-tubes here in the next month of so. I'm really more anxious for the BB tune than anything.

My first race was against a F-250. I had two trucks on him till the 1/8th mile marker, then he came trucking bye. He had a bunch of stickers from a local diesel tuning shop, so I'm sure he probably had something done to it. I lost.

My second race was against a late 90's model hatch with a VTEC swap. I could hear the VTEC kicking in, but I kept about 1.5 lengths on him the entire time. Even though it was my only win of the night, it always feels good to beat up on a Honda.

I guess I'm going to start looking for another DSM to prep for track days. I got rid of my last one a few years back, and I've always missed it. If nothing else, I can pull it to the track with my truck, haha.

(BTW, i forgot to mention for those that don't know what a DSM is. A DSM is the 1st/2nd gen Eclipses/Talons/Lasers. I had several from N/A cars to my track-only GST to my street AWD TSI.)

Bro, there must of been something wrong with that VTEC because the VTEC that I have in my 2005 Saturn Vue (yes GM used a Honda power train for certain model year Vue) is pretty quick and could run circles around my Sierra if I could keep the tires from breaking loose, lol

Man.... 17's? :banghead:

The truck feels faster than that. I plan to take her to the track to do a few runs just to get some idea.

Is the 15's only with the Blackbear tune, or did you run it before the tune? I really thought the truck felt faster than a 17 too, but the time slips don't lie. Like I said though, I had some really bad 60' times, so with that improved, the time would also improve.

that seems really slow. i ran a 15.8 in my 2001 silverado with a shitty flowmaster muffler and a shitty superchips tune with the stock intake, spare and toolbox, 265's. surprising for a 12 year old truck

Corey, your truck should be much faster than 17s. Mine will run in the 15s even on a hot day. Best of 15.44

Glad to hear it. With the truck tuned I'm anxious to get out there just to see. :ughdance: I never did get any base line runes to really judge the tune effectiveness though, damnit.

It broke into the 15s (aka 15.9) with the intake and tune only. I'd consider the intake a cosmetic mod, but I'd also say it was a 90+ degree night when I first went. The only thing that changed from the first track day to the second was the addition of the corsa exhaust and ~20 degrees cooler day which made my times drop by ~.5 second.
