Check out this link and scroll down to the oval steps. It says they are constructed of stainless steel and chrome plated. Maybe it's just the chrome plating that is showing rust spots. Funny ,I was just down at the dealer picking up a set of splash guards and on their accessory display I looked at the 6" oval steps in chrome and all black and both were constructed from plastic.I thumped on them and also lifted up on them and they were very light weight plastic. Unless they were just display dummies.I dunno? All the other accessories on the display were the actual part.

Fyi - The GM side steps are Made in China and as most auto parts made in China tend to use the cheapest materials imagineable.

Under the guidelines for GM Parts Warranties, all GM Accessories sold and permanently installed on a GM vehicle PRIOR to new vehicle delivery will be covered under the provisions of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

I hope my dealer did not screw me on this (sold and permanently installed on a GM vehicle PRIOR to new vehicle delivery ). The accessories were sold with the truck new (GM Business perks w/rebate) but the dealer could not install them before delivery because they never arrived in time from GM Parts and they would only schedule the installation on their timetable. They had almost a week to get them but did not. Its all on the original sales invoice though as long at the dealer never logged when they were installed but to stick that caveate "permanently installed on a GM vehicle PRIOR to new vehicle delivery" in there give them an out?

Also, it seems GM considers cosmetic flaws (surface rust) to be the customers problems it would seem. A friend has a 2011 Silverado HD and he is fighting with his dealer because the rear bumper rusted in 6-months allbeit thru the winter in a heavily road salt used state. Dealer says it not a warranty problem, customer did not take care of vehicle etc. SM is sticking to his guns on that and won't replace.

You might be a nicer guy than Kevin, he is very confrontational and goes in with a po'd attitude.

Well, finally got a response back from the body shop service manager, after second time there for rail dust spots that seem to be appearing more frequently, trucks going into shop to get it polished to remove yellow dust spots in morning. As far as the rusty oval steps, he kept telling me that he was advised by Gm that if they were replaced previoulsy they would not replace them according to Gm's policy. I advised him of the service bulletins, he told me he was unaware of them. Come on, and said no problem, wasn't going to argue with him, that I would contact Gm directly to get problem resolved, his repsonse, fine. Wow, front bumper rusted, oval steps rusted replaced, rusted after one winter, could imagine after 5 years what kind of shape certain parts are going to look like.

To others following this thread.... deal with the rust till the 34th /35th month,,,, then go to the Dealer for replacements.

UrbanCowboy... same down here, NY loves that road salt, it attacks everything. :(

I have a feeling if you have this problem (rust and no fix) after 6 months, then GM/dealerships wouldn't even think about replacing/repairing your vehicle after 34/35 months of use. Just saying...

Get some MAAP steps. The ones on our work truck have 6 years and ~100k on them and still look good. That's being covered in mud all winter and hit with gravel all year round.

I would like to look into this for you. Have you been in contact with customer assistance? Please contact me privately with your name, contact information, last eight of your VIN, current mileage, and dealer name and I will be able to set up a case for you. I look forward to hearing from you.

Tricia, GM Customer Service.

Here is a suggestion: Start making these oval steps out of good quality polished stainless. GM is already charging over $ 600 for a set of cheap chromed steps that do not seem to last through one winter without rusting. A set of polished stainless steps should not cost much more than about $ 800 with a decent profit margin. And there would be no need to replace them under warranty.

As you know, there are aftermarket nerf bars that are made of polished stainless, such as Nasta bars. Some even come with stainless mounting brackets for about $ 350 total cost.

I like to see a link for the bars for 350.00 with the stainless steel brackets. IMHO those (the brackets) are the weak spot. The vast majority are some sort of steel/metal brackets and they rust pretty fast where it snows.

I am wondering how thick those brackets are though.

Back from the dealer, for removal of rail dust spots, get it home and still spots all over truck, looks like they buffed most of them out, as noticed buff dust still on truck. Wouldn't you think they would inspect the vehicle to make sure most were removed and cleaned up for customer? I know you can't get every spot, wasn't impressed gave negative feedback on their survey. As for Road salt not only rusts vehicle but jacks up your blood pressure.

if you live where there is alot of snow you are picking up filings on the roads from the plows. they look like little rust spots all over. claybar and wax will take care of it. winters suck

I have white diamond paint too, rail dust is an issue because it's so easily identified in the paint. I just get it out with a little cleaner wax, only takes a few minutes to go over the whole truck and then i throw a good wax on her with my porter cable wheel (takes like an hour and a half) and its all done. just look for the spots each time you wash it and take care of 'em when they come up.
