Just found out clearing the codes wont make the truck pass emmissions. The computer they hook up knows if the OBD on your truck has been cleared and if it has gone thru all the test cycles. If it say's not ready you have to drive around for a week or so until it checks all the sytems. Hope the gas cap was the problem since they could not find any vapor leak. CRAZY!

 

Yet another of many reasons why I'll never buy another vehicle built after 1995. OBD-II SUCKS!

They did know when i cleared my codes, i just claimed i had a dead battery and jumped it to get there

You are lucky, here they dont care how the codes got cleared, if their computer senses that not all systems have been checked they just fail you and you get 60 days to come back for a "free" re-test. CT Sucks.

Same with MA -- you get a big black "R" on your sticker for " REJECTED" - which gives police a reason to pull you over no matter what. Every light can be working, and you can be going exactly the speed limit with your seat belt on like a good lamb - it doesn't matter. The sticker gives them "cause".

 

If you fail safety, you get a red R - but that I can understand. Emissions is just way overblown these days, & it only affects those who can least afford it. Those who can afford it just buy a new one every 3 years, so it doesn't make a difference to them.Those are the people writing these laws too - go figure.

Exactly. Also in CT you don't have to do any repairs if you can show you are at poverty level and have no assets. Otherwise you must spend at least $787.00 trying to get it to pass.

When the smoke test is done does it check for gas tank connections like the seal for the fuel pump to tank and the rubber filler hose connections? He told me it did and now he is frustrated because they cant find any leaks. Dosen't want to work on it anymore. To me it is just too wierd that the light came on a few days after they dropped the tank and put the new pump in.

I turn away any EVAP work - not worth the trouble. I make more money fixing weedwackers and lawnmowers than trying to find a pinhole leak in 10 miles of hoses.

Yea, I know it is frustration. Thing is right now I wont pass emmisions, even if I cleared the code. kicking myself now for even bringing it in, the pump itself was ok the sending unit was just whacky. Think I will just keep driving it to see if somehow it resets and if not there is a state licensed emmisions guy in my town, I met him at a function a few months ago so I guess he will get some $$$.

Someone needs to design a cheater system - like a vacuum orb that takes the place of the tank - keep the orb sealed & light goes out, keeping your money in your pocket where it belongs.

Almost a month now of back and forth. Still SES will come on acouple days after he clears it. They cant find the leak, tested the purge solenoid, works fine. now they are dropping the tank to see if something related to the new fuel pump is causing the leak.

Here in Mass. we have a right to repair question comming up for vote I hope it passes so all shops

will be able to do warrenty work! Pride/workmanship at most non-dealer shops is very good! Fix-it like

it's your own is a good rep. for any bussness not have

Well I guess that's something good about Kansas... No emissions or inspections. Most people here depend on their vehicles an usually fix them on their own. Most farmers cut off their cats as soon as they buy a truck to avoid setting fields or pastures on fire. Cops don't even inspect to see if you have cats when you're pulled over. Almost makes the hellish heat worth it.

Cutting off cats to avoid setting fields on fire? That's a damn myth, especially with how high up they are on most trucks now. If someone does that now they're just being a damn idiot. If you feel like cutting off cats whatever, but it won't be any "safer" in the field than before.

I still have mine, my truck doesn't get driven in fields, and only on paths in the pasture. But trust me, there's been more than one well meaning person who's parked on a stubble field, or accidentally lit off a pasture. Doesn't take much, especially when it's this dry.

Just for the heck of it: what's the DTC code you are getting when the light comes on. I had a lot of problems with the stupid EVAP system on my Silverado. Got them fixed after much cussing.
