Not happy

Well I took my truck to the guy I have known for 10 years, very honest. I told him to replace the fuel pump and while it was there change oil too. He had one of his guys do the work who he claims has 30 years experience. I pick up the truck, go home open the hood and see oil splatters randomly all over. I go back the next day and he reams the guy out for being sloppy. Yesterday the SES light comes on steady. I go back he reads the code as vac leak and re-sets it. He say's gas cap might have been loose, if it comes on again he will have to smoke test the system. Today I read in a Corvette forum that running engine with oil fill cap off will cause ECM to sense a lean mixture and report a vac leak! So obviously the sloppy tech ran the engine with the cap off causing the light to come on. I think that is the end to me giving him buisiness!

Ugh that sucks. I would make sure the guy you have been dealing with is the only one to touch your truck the next time you take it there. If you take it there again that is..

Well that's a better story that my father's. He takes his '09 Duramax to dealer for that stupid particulate filter that seems to clog up every 2k miles like clockwork. Gets it back, and while passing a car on the way to my house he hears a loud BANG, and the truck has no power. I find the lower plumbing from the turbo (pressure side) blown right off. Was going to fix it for him, but he says "they F'ed it up, let them fix it" ....... so gets towed back to dealer. They fix it HOURS later. He leaves for FL the next week pulling a 5th wheel camper. Around GA the truck is in limp mode. Goes to a dealer down there. They find the tech installed the pipe with NO O-RING, so that whole trip and then some, the truck was sucking in unfiltered dirty air!

 

Bottom line is, commission isn't the best way to pay a tech. It is if you own the business .... but not if your a customer!!!

its called flat rate ,it sucks bad for everyone...

 

i felt like a contractor when i was a gm tech,no work ,we sat on our bench,we barely kept our bays clean,there was a shop bitch to clean up lol

 

we prepared the quotes ,looked up the labour ,some shops have the advisors look it up

 

then there are days when ya get a Allison extension housing replacement to do ,,,,do it in the truck and it pays 10 hrs, takes maybe 2.5 hrs ,thats the part that keeps a tech around ,,ya have to be cheatin whore to make any money,,,,

 

dont get me goin on warranty repair times.......

 

im out of that enviroment thank god !!!!!

Me too, although I did it in the motorcycle field it sucks just the same.

 

Now I work for myself. If I don't feel like working, I don't. Dead broke, but I'm happy ... and SANE.

People that have no pride in the work they do should be fired. I cant even think of leaving someones engine looking like you shot oil out of a water pistol all over it then just slamming the hood and moving on. The guy who owns the shop I used told me he gives them 2 chances when they screw up. He said to me "who knows how many customers I lost cause of these guys". I would bet a lot.

Update- The SES light came back on after only a few days after the code was cleared. Bringing it back today after work, he said he would not get to it until tomorrow. I said it seems coincidental that his guy dropped the tank and removed the lines and had to fabricate part of the return line and then the light comes on 2 days later. He said if it turns out it is something the guy did then they will cover it. He's a good guy but I'm getting tired of visiting his shop.

The EVAP system has to be the DUMBEST system ever devised in automotive history. It also happens to be the LEAST reliable system going.

 

I mean, really .... when was the last time you dropped dead after catching a whiff of gasoline fumes??? Has nothing to do with the environment. it's a giant revenue generator - nothing more.

Yea, here in CT when they had the old emmissions testing stations they used to screw your gas cap into a fixture to see if it was leaking. Big money maker for the state. Then they found out the company running the system was scamming the state, taking bribes from people who's vehicles flunked.

add little dirt road time and poof,that'll be a zillion dollars to fix the pesky light on the dash sir !!!

They used the smoke machine on it yesterday. He said they smoked the H*** out of it and no smoke leaked out. He is really frustrated. He said to try a new gas cap since this one is original, 11 years old. I bought one after I left his shop. If the light comes on again I am going to ignore it until the emmission test is due. He said he would clear the code, they wont even test it here if the light is on. Thanks EPA!!!

I was never a fan of the smoke machine. I always had better luck slightly pressurizing the system and using an ultrasonic leak detector (basically a very sensitive microphone).

Just found out clearing the codes wont make the truck pass emmissions. The computer they hook up knows if the OBD on your truck has been cleared and if it has gone thru all the test cycles. If it say's not ready you have to drive around for a week or so until it checks all the sytems. Hope the gas cap was the problem since they could not find any vapor leak. CRAZY!

They did know when i cleared my codes, i just claimed i had a dead battery and jumped it to get there
