Our high school ag teacher's truck caught fire in a field because the cats got on dry grass. Field wasn't particularly tall, but the uneven surface allowed wheels to go low and get hot parts on dry parts.

 

That said, it wasn't a higher-setting full size truck. It was an 80's model Dodge Dakota.

 

Point being, it does happen.

I said several times I could see it on an old truck with a cat mounted low but I seriously doubt a modern truck with the cats up by the manifold could pose any risk.

Just found out clearing the codes wont make the truck pass emmissions. The computer they hook up knows if the OBD on your truck has been cleared and if it has gone thru all the test cycles. If it say's not ready you have to drive around for a week or so until it checks all the sytems. Hope the gas cap was the problem since they could not find any vapor leak. CRAZY!

 

Just for the heck of it: what's the DTC code you are getting when the light comes on. I had a lot of problems with the stupid EVAP system on my Silverado. Got them fixed after much cussing.

 

Last Friday he found a TSB related to the purge valve solenoid leaking. He replaced it and I drove 300 miles over 7 days driving under all conditions, 85 mph hi-way, 20 mph local road, even added fuel, no light. Today coming to work guess what? *#!&%### SES comes on! He told me Friday if the light comes back to come back an he will replace the valve itself- involves re-routing the lines so he was hoping the solenoid would do the trick. He hasnt charged me for any of this yet. starting to think this truck wants to drive me crazy!!

Mystery solved! Running out of things to check he decided to drop the tank and look at what the guy did when he replaced the fuel pump back in June. When they removed the filler neck they found 2 corrosion holes about .020 in size. The smoke machine did not detect them because the rubber hose was covering them up. New filler neck and hose- so far no lights!
