Muffler or No Muffler?

I have a custom dual exhaust that both pipes go into one muffler then Y off into the duals in the rear. Has anyone ran no muffler at all and liked it better or got better gains or is that a bad idea? I live in an area with no emissions or anything so i can do pretty much what i want. Just curious if having no muffler helped or just getting a good high flow muffler is the way to go. Thanks for the help!

I would keep a muffler on there. Running no muffler sounds like crap. There is alot of drone and you will get sick of it. A good option for you would be since you already have a custom duel exhaust, get rid of that single muffler and replace it with two separate mufflers for each pipe that way it would be a true duel. Maybe try some bullet mufflers like aero exhaust, or dynomax.

+1 on running mufflers. It will sound like shit without them and this is 2012...it's not cool anymore.

I have no muffler on my set up and love the sound but you will see a loss in performance

I got true duals no muffle (cats are still on ) on my 01 Z and it sounds pretty good to me. I think thats the way a truck should sound. I love the way it sounds, it nots loud at all in the cab and i have yet to get sick of it

It can sound good, but a lot of the time it doesn't. Of course that is personal opinion. You will see a power loss. When I ran no mufflers on a car a few years back, the car sounded good but lost a noticeable amount of low end power.

I recently took that massive muffler off my Sierra (5.3L) and put a Borla on. It changed the truck for the better. I noticed things like throttle repsonse was better and low end power got a little better. For the record I have never seen or held such big and heavy muffler. :freak:

I want more power and torque not less. Wasnt sure if it would help or worsen that aspect. Ill keep the muffler for sure.

My exhaust is a custom one done at a shop. It comes down from the cats and goes into a fitting that welds the 2 sides together. Then it goes into a muffler and spreads back out to make the duals. How much of a gain would it be to true dual it from what i have? Or is that worth the hassle?

I don't mean to offend anybody here but no muffler is just too hillbilly loud to sound good to me. I know all exhausts are different, but I vote for muffler(s).

+2 - We have plenty of old junk trucks and cars running around in this area with no mufflers. Our Jeep came from the factory with 2 bullet mufflers and 2 resonators and it sounds just right to me. The resonators are what give the exhaust that low pitch rumble bada$$ sound and I have no idea why people take off the resonators.

Older trucks sound decent straightpiped or with glasspacks, 99's and newer with 5.3's, not really good at all. If you want a more aggressive sound, try a short Magnaflow.
