New GM service policy?

i know, just wanna see if they or the monitors, will have the "balls".....i can see if it is bob the mechanic from around the corner doing it, but if it is a reputable company, what is the problem. callaway cars and trucks carry a warranty, and they tend to be more agressive in their setups, but again without obviously going beyond the capabilities of everything. if i am rich in my next life, i would just order a callaway and not worry about this!!!

you cant for the older ECM to capture the flash data, the OS does not support it. No way GM is going to write a new OS for those older ECM's and then reflash all of those ECM's each time they come in for repairs just to see if someone did tune or to be able to catch someone if they tune.

Like said, unless it is the newer GM Global system then GM cant see if the ECM was tuned as long as the stock tune is put back into the ECM before the work is done, as mentioned at that time the CVN's will match the info in the GM database and it will be a non-issue.

If you get any reply I can already tell you what it will say-

It will mention BB modifies things beyond the control/oversight of GM.

Such mods can have adverse effects on NVH levels.

Changes in fuel economy or driveability.

The tunes aren't tested by GM to ensure emissions compliance, component durability or to ensure they meet customer experience criteria.

Again, keep in mind I'm not bad mouthing BB or tuning in general, if my truck weren't technically a business vehicle I'd probably have done it by now. But I'm going to be blunt and say you're being foolish if you ever expect GM to have anything positive to say about tunes.

And Calloway can warranty their products because they're a huge company and the cost of warranty is built into the vehicle price.

GM wouldn't have a problem to begin with if they wouldn't cut the balls off of their engines by detuning the computer so it doesn't blow apart the cheap and weak parts that they use...

I think he has to say standard tools just to cover his....... What if GM were to develop a process to identify the number of ECM flashes (Non Global A) or made a change in new ECM's at any point in time. As I've said before in posts, I researched this very issue to death in all of the 10 or so forums Black Bear sponsers plus elsewhere on the net. I read literally thousands of post and have yet to see a single post where someone reported that GM discovered that their vehicle had been tuned when returned to stock. I'm still under warranty and purchased the extended warranty and I'm not worried. If I have a failure and I'm wrong I'll just fight GM through their arbitration process. I can't believe an arbitrator would let GM thumb their noses at the law.

If you get a spare ecm/tcm, you modify the spares, and keep original ones stock. Swap them out when vehicle goes in for work. I would imagine if the repair required is something that is not unusual, and the vehicle has not really caught anyones attention, even a modified ecm will get repaired, and the ecm not checked. From what I understand reading that post with the details on how to check, it did not say they must check. It was pointing out how to check if needed. Looked like they are putting the onus on the dealer to check if they suspect it has been modded. They are asking the dealer to work on GM's behalf. I expect my dealer to work on my behalf, not GM's. GM is putting the dealer in a tough spot during tough times.

Every manufacturer has electronic controls in their powertrains and aside from the worthless G80, GM truck powertrains are the best out there. Plenty of LSx engines with over 200k miles on them, I'll be surprised if a Ford 5.0 does that with its miles of timing chains. All manufacturers also have the same stance on tunes and all have procedures in place for dealers to follow before doing big buck warranty repairs. Your sense of entitlement is absurd, the warranty is to cover factory defects and with a tune, the truck is no longer factory. Simple as that.

Yup. For me it's because there easy to work on, and it's all I've been around growing up while learning about vehicles. The Gen 4 5.3 didn't impress me stock, and after having small problems along with Transmission trouble I decided to just buy the truck I really wanted to begin with. No Tune for me because the 6.2 is a beast stock IMO.

Actually, not so simple. If they find a tune they no longer will cover a factory defect and automatically cancel ALL powertrain warranty and warranty on all future repairs blaming it on a tune before a problem or issue has even happened. If their crystal ball was so good why did they go bankrupt. This is like saying if you put in a non AC Delco air filter that the truck is no longer factory. This was the reason for the Magnassum-Moss warranty act and GM is ignoring it knowing most customers won't know about it or fight it. A company like GM should not only comply with the letter of the law but with the spirit of the law.

Very simple-IMHO. GM has a boardroom full of lawyers and will eat any of us and our individual lawyers ALIVE. It's as simple as that. Even if you got that far. The legal system is for wealthy people period. If they said a tune blew you motor, by the time you got done in court it would be far cheaper to put a $5,000.00 motor in to your truck than to fight it. I don't care about Magnassum-Moss Act or any other circus act, if your not rich you don't stand a chance. And most of here are not rich.

This. The legal system in this country is a joke, nothing more.

Maybe so but you missed my point. Are you a conspiracy theorist too?

You may disagree and not like what I said, but there are not any conspiracies involved. Honoring warranties and why they went bankrupt really are not related.

    • Holy s**t - not much of a parts thrower you say? You BLASTED that thing with the parts cannon!  You'd have been probably $1,000 ahead if you had just brought it to a competent shop rather than shotgunning a bunch of parts it clearly didn't need.   Just FYI - oil additives are really, REALLY good at ONE thing ... and that's emptying your wallet. They're ALL useless gimmicks.   If that has the L94 or L99, then #7 is an AFM cylinder. I'd suspect a failed lifter in that case.   If you leaned on wiring, sensors, and/or connectors while changing the oil, you'll have to check all that to be sure pins didn't get pulled out, connectors broken, etc.. Old wire loom that was barely adequate when new is certainly brittle by year 19 - make sure wires aren't chaffed and shorting out somewhere where you might have leaned. or supported yourself on it.   If your a mechanic, why didn't you just find out what you were missing and troubleshoot from there??  TIMED spark, fuel PSI / injector pulse, air, compression.  Can't make ANY money going the parts cannon route.
    • LOL! Are you joking?? That wax SUCKS! 100% gimmick made to "look" good.    After just TWO winters I had severe surface rusting in patches over 90% of the frame. Only reason it looks great in the pics is because I SATURATED the frame every single fall with used motor oil for 14 of the 16 years I owned it. Otherwise it would've been sent to the crusher 8 years earlier with the speed it was rusting prior!    I sold that POS 3 years ago. Was a gigantic headache the second it rolled off the showroom floor. Brakes pulsated on the TEST DRIVE. Door trim fell off the 1st week! Interior squeaked and rattled, and the drivetrain clunked after 2k miles. 4x4 switch failed shortly after. Front end - ball joints, struts, hub bearings - all failed between 38k-50k. Engine started burning oil at 50k. Rear and and transmission failed before 100k. Nothing but problems, and frustration with the piss-poor engineering designed to make you give up. Well, it worked! Nothing on that truck was easy to remove ... except the wheels. They haven't figured out how to screw that up yet. Give 'em time ...   I won't make that mistake again. EVER.   Such fond memories ... https://postimg.cc/K1qf23tS  https://postimg.cc/gallery/X02z64J  https://postimg.cc/gallery/mHSRXZv  https://postimg.cc/gallery/D4mMRfL
    • Different monitors do their test only under conditions specific to that monitor.  you MIGHT find the drive cycle conditions for the monitor that isn't ready on this site: https://lemon-manuals.la/   If it's not there, then it should be on alldata.com for your truck, but it requires a paid subscription.   And you need to know which specific monitor isn't ready.
    • from another thread   Update...although the truck sometimes seems to idle weird and the transmission shift a little weird, I've driven about 7,000  miles and no issues.   However, the way GM has handled my rental reimbursement, the situation when my truck quit, and the recall in general has led me to this point...I have driven a GM vehicle for the past 46 years and unless I buy a C3 Corvette, this is the last GM vehicle I will ever own.
