Elusive oil burn problem - now rough idle

started having the elusive oil burning issue with my 2010 Chevy Crew Cab z71 5.3 aluminum block with the 6 speed and AFM. A fouled no 1 cyclinder spark plug left me on the side of the road at 42,000 miles. did oil consumption test and was "within spec" at 1.5 quarts low during alotted time. Raised hell and am currently getting valve cover, oil defelctor - blah blah blah done today.

 

ive read just about every post on every gm forum on this but nothing has been stated withing the past 6 mos on actually fixing the issues. i know most ppl are having the rings/pistons changes. but i have really been thinking about trading for a 2013 or something. just worried what problems will happen above 100K miles when the warranty is out.

 

well i picked my truck up and now i have a engine "knock" at idle. almost like a miss like the truck wants to stall with what seems to me like really low oil pressure. heres a video of the tach and oil pressure gauge.

I’m sorry you are experiencing this issue with your Silverado vehicle. Have you contacted your dealer to notify them of this new “knock” noise?

louis thanks for your reply. turns out i had yet another oil fouled spark plug causing a misfire that had not yet pinged a code. has there been any solution to the oil burn off/ fouled plug issue on the 5.3l v8 with afm?

This is toyota's stance on oil burning. 1.1qt per 600 miles is acceptable

Doing the math puts your truck right at the limit so I'm not sure how GM would look at that. Ask and see I guess. It's so unfortunate that with modern technology going into these vehicles that ANY oil loss is considered "acceptable". I never lost any measurable amount on my '06 until around ~70k miles. However, that is at 70k miles, to say it's acceptable to lose 1 qt in 2000 miles in a brand new engine to me is rather UNacceptable, but who am I to judge?

it looks like i am going to eventually have to do the piston and ring job they told me in 2000 miles to come back and more than likely we would schedule that.

 

Thats IF i keep this truck that long.

 

idk what i am going to do.
