where to put the dog?

We have two kids 4 and 6 and when we camp we pull our pop up camper and the bed of truck is also full of gear. Our extended cab truck has a retractable roll up cover by Bak. I wish I had instead bought a cap, but a cap is not the most practicle for me for the rest of the year (retractable cover is not the best but it has some advantages and also cost me $800 so I am stuck with it). We have two dogs our older dog is a mutt and from a shelter and has always been a nervous dog so we do not bring her camping but we have a 14 week old lab and next summer I want to bring her but don't know how she could fit without bringing my wifes car. Any chance if we move the front seats up she can fit on the floor in the back? Also if i find a used cap on craigslist that I can put on just when we go camping I am wondering if it will go on even with retractable cover still installed.

Anyone have a similar situation, any ideas. Also when I bought the truck I thought about crew cap but really needed 6.5 bed for when I haul equipment/materials for my plumbing buisness (normal everyday work truck is express 2500).

Thanks for the input.

We have a 120lb black lab that rides in the back of my crewcab. We have a 6 month old and a 3 yr old. The dog gets the 40% side behind the passenger. He has plenty of room to lay down (this is in a crewcab).

I have a 105 lb black lab. With the rear seats flipped up there really isn't enough room for him to lay down. But with the seats flipped down he can lay on the back seat just fine. I got one of those seat protectors specifically designed for dogs. It loops over the rear head rests and protects the seat from hair (and vomit if he gets sick).

I guess I'm missing something here. If you have an extended cab with nothing in the back, why can't the dog ride there? I've got the crew cab so maybe I don't understand the limitations here, but as I recall when I was looking at them, the back looked large enough for a small adult, certainly large enough for a dog. Am I mistaken?

He's got two kids who ride back there. I don't see how the dog will fit in the extcab with the kids, but you may have to just do a test at home. Put the kids in and see how the dog fits. Before too long you are probably going to have to trade up to a crew cab...

What I did for my Mountain Dog was to build a wooded platform. It fits behind the drivers seat and comes up a few inches short of the top of the rear seat. We us an old blanket to then fill the gap. This can be done to either side. The platform is made to come out, and also to fit with the front seat in my normal position. With this and the two kids, the dog shoud be able to lay down and ride ok. Ours likes to sit back on the seat and look out.

I just thought that if you have to tether the kids seats both outboard, you might be able to make this work in the middle for you.

Do as they did with Aunt Edna's dog in the Vacation movie

Do you really get that much more room in Crew cab vs. ext cab. I know you do get more room but is the difference really that great. It seams that even if I had crew cab with two car seats would there be enough room between two of them for lab to lay for a couple of hours? When I looked at cc it seamed the seats were deeper/bigger but seamed like same amount of leg room. I would be curious to see what differnce is in cubic ft between the two. If I were to switch it would need to be substantial increase in size.

For the 2013 Silverado 1500 4WD for example, the leg room in the rear is 38.70 inches in the crew cab and 34.30 inches in the extended cab models. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The numbers you posted are with the front seats fully forward. Highly unlikely anybody needs to have the front seat pulled up that far when they are driving. In my Ext. Cab trucks, the driver seat is back all the way and there is not much leg room at all.

Yeah that does not sound like a huge difference to me between the two models. The seat I am sure also is deeper but my kids dont need a deep seat because they are still small. It just seams like you loose so much more bed space and dont gain that much more room in back of cabin to justify switching from ext cab to cc. If my kids were ridding in truck all the time would be different but the whole family only rides in truck on rare occasions and we only take it camping three or four trips a year.

That dlesnt sound like much, but when i was looking the infant catrier with the quick mount base would only fit in the ext with the seat all thr way forward. They crew cab it fit the the seat all the way back and a little room to spare. So i was sold. Go test drive one and bring it home, throw a kid seat or 2 in there and heck i would toss the dog in there to!
