2004 Chevy Silverado cabin noise

I have searched all over the net and have found people having similar issues. However, I have never seen a for sure way to resolve the problem. After reading countless threads and scrolling through all the pages to find that there is no for sure answer I decided to embark on my own journey and join this forum.

 

On with the problem, I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado (Ext/Cab). The truck has alot of miles but has never had any body damage or been in any wrecks for that matter. Since I got the truck about 6 months ago it has always had an extreme amount of noise coming from the A-Pillar area once you hit highway speed 50+, on both the driver and passenger side. I have checked both the window seal and door seal and it looks as if it has no problems. I have tried repositioning the seal and/or weather stripping and it has made no difference whatsoever. I am going to be trailering a car to Texas in a couple weeks and before I make the 12 hour + drive I would really like to get this fixed. I have found that if I grab onto the handle on the inside of the door panel by the window control switch and pull the whole door towards me the sound slightly decreases but is still noticeable. Before taking this to my dealer or spending money throwing parts at it to fix it, I thought I would ask the community if anyone has had a problem like this and have successfully fixed it.

Is it kind a fluttering, flapping noise? The windshield reveal moldings on the left and right sides will make that noise. If so take some urethane or similar molding adhesive and apply a bead under each side and tape down for a day to dry.

Not really a flapping noise. More like a constant whistle. The faster I go, the louder and more annoying it gets lol. While I'm driving, If I really yank on the door toward me to the point to where I feel like im going to break the panel the noise will slightly decrease.

 

Frustrating.......

On my old truck I had this issue, with new pins in the door it decreased. After that, a deer hit the door, causing it to flex a little and getting rid of the noise completely. Not sure how that worked lol.

 

I would take a look at the hinges and the latches on the door, if they're worn replacing them may help. You could try lubricating the seals with silicone as well, I think a few people do that.

Lol very interesting. All it seems that I need to do is find a deer and cut it off haha. When you say lubricate the seals with silicone do you mean the inside of the seal that rests against the body or all over the seals, both the door side and body side? I'm pretty sure the air is coming from the door and not the actual window.

my truck has cabin noise too. dont think its as bad as yours, but its still annoying. supposedly getting all new seals will fix it. just what ive heard though.

I know with the older vehicles we used to be able to adjust the door latch pin - not sure if you can do that with these newer ones, but if you can, set it closer to the cab, so the door closes tighter. Might not look pretty from outside, but at least it'll do for the trip.

I've heard of using it on the inner weatherstripping, lots of people use it on their extendable mirrors I think. I've never tried it, with my old truck I'd just turn up the radio.

 

With my old truck the gap was right next to where the a pillar met the roof between the inner door seal and the door I think.

 

But hinges and latch would be first for me, since hinges made the most difference (other than the deer of course)

i had that on my 99 and body shop pulled on top of the door to make it fit tighter against the body... worked wonders. tighter seal against the seal

I get a noise in mine but I think it is my back windows.

You can fix the back windows by sealing them so they can't open. I haven't done it because I use mine time to time. My pass side one makes noise and leaks with high pressure water.

My rear passenger window has leaked and caused my brother to take a money shot in the drive thru car wash. I never use mine and I'm not sure how to seal them

Dad's 99 had this problem. At first it was the windshield so he used silicone on it around the bottom, and it went away.

 

After a while it came back again, and like others have said his drivers side door pins were shot. Replaced them over a year ago, and it's been quiet again ever since.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
