Starbucks Bans Guns

Blackout you may be missing my point. If the law allows somthing, in this case its open carry of a firearm, law enforcmen should not bother the law biding citzen, if they are just that law biding. If a store chooses to have a policy to not allow it, then the customer must follow that policy or choose not to visit the store. Its is simple. My point with you as a law enforcement officer is that you enforce the law not make it. As your statement earlier gave the impression you would act on a open carry situation because it made you feel uneasy. Trust me I deal with trying to see the strategic view of the situation everyday, and your implication that I cannot see that is not correct. Again, no skin off my nose we can just agree to disagree and move on. Have a good day.

It's all good. I never meant to imply that I make the laws...but I do enforce the laws of my state. So perhaps that's why I see this much differently than some of you. The term "law abiding citizen" is being thrown around a lot. What does a law abiding citizen look like, and how does one go about establishing that fact...hence the crystal ball term. I'm certainly not a liberal, but I've seen enough bad stuff and dead cops to know that it's better to be cautious and ask questions than it is to be complacent and make assumptions. Perhaps if open carry was common in Texas I would see things slightly differently. While it's not illegal per se to carry a long gun openly here, I would indeed not turn a blind eye to someone with a firearm in a business that in no way deals in firearms. And I can guarantee you we would get about 3 dozen calls on it. I don't think that makes me paranoid or a fear monger, but rather displays a shred of common sense. Pick any active shooter story you want and think about how differently some could have played out. Now ask yourself why guns make people nervous in certain social settings. There's nothing wrong with that. The problem with our country is that opposing sides to any situation refuse to see things remotely logically. The result is extremes on both sides. I support the right to carry guns, however the states choose to allow, but I feel that it's a great responsibility as well.

Old thread but I have to say I'm shocked that only one person had the "You're either for gun rights or against gun rights" attitude..... I shy away from the subject of guns on forums and life because there usually seems to be two groups "Gun Nuts" and "anti gun nuts" I am neither. I own 22 guns. Mostly Hunting rifles and shotguns. My only handguns are a .22 H&R Revolver, and a 9mm for personal protection but I'll be damned if i'm going to brandish it let alone discharge it unless my life or family is threatened. I have never been or never will be an NRA member. I don't believe Obama's out to "Git yer Guns", I do not believe Gun Control will stop crime but I do not see a problem with background checks to buy a gun (got nothing to hide) On Starbucks, I feel like most of you do. Private Business, wanted to remain neutral and the "Nuts" on both sides ruined it. Simply put Why the hell would anyone need to open carry in starbucks? it makes us "normal" gun owners look bad and I agree, I would feel nervous around someone with the mentality to open carry in a damn starbucks. If you're too lazy or cannot get a CWP, (which I do have for the record) I don't want you open carrying either. you give all of us a bad image.

It's really not an "attitude" at all, it's my personal belief both as a law enforcement officer, and United States citizen. The 2nd Amendment is plain and simple, very easy to understand. If you don't want to exercise that right, that's fine, it's your choice to make. You are either for it or against it, there is no in between.

It's not background checks that people are worried about. We have been getting them done for a long time now for a firearms purchase of every kind. It's the Govt's wording and what they really want to do with that information that people are against.

It's nobody's business but my own how many firearms and what kind I own, period.

I like guns, was raised around guns, used guns in the military, and count on and use guns to protect lives every day at work. If that makes me a so called 'gun nut' as you stated, so be it, whatever helps you sleep at night.

Read the legislation that the Kenyan in chief and his lefties are still trying to push. YES, they ARE out to get the guns. Look at NY, NJ, CA.......the list goes on.

New laws that do nothing but attempt to punish law abiding citizens. It's about total control of the people, that's their mentality.

Why is OC so much more threatening than CC. I never got that. I'd rather know who was packing vs. trying to guess.

Well, I guess I'm not normal, make people nervous, and lazy.... sorry about your bad image.

I have my CPL, I chose not to open carry but there is no reason people shouldn't if they so chose and there is no reason to force people to get a CPL either. Michigan and every other state that forces you to take classes and pay extraordinary fees to exercise a right need to be fixed- I bet I spent over $300 between the class, ammo, application and gas to get my CPL here. In New Hampshire? $10 application. No class, no finger prints and they have to have it back to you in two weeks, period. The crap MI and other states make you go through do not make you any safer- NH has an easy permitting process and Vermont is a constitutional carry state meaning no permit is needed to OC or CC and yet they're two of the safest states in the country to live in. Michigan on the other hand, isn't.

And for the record, if someone is not able to get a CPL than chances are they likely cannot legally own the gun anyhow so the OC somehow being more dangerous is a myth.

The Starbucks policy seems to have parallels to the policies of the old west to me. Some towns had policies of no guns on the streets, some bars had no gun policies. So, the no-gun policy of a town or business isn't new.

I just saw something where the Vikings that had invaded Scotland, England, Ireland, etc, and had converted to Christianity, had to leave their weapons at the door of the church.
