Hello I'm new here and have owned nothing but gm trucks. My wife just bought a new 5.3l 2014 sliverado crew cab with a 3.08 gears in the rear end. My last three trucks including the one that I own now were all crew cab Duramax diesels. All three diesels were heavily modded and have all had well over 500 hp at the wheels. I am not too crazy about the newer Duramax diesels( too much emissions crap, make it very hard to add big hp ). So now I am the market for the new 2014 gm truck with the 420 hp 6.2l motor. My only concern was how much power they made and what the fuel mileage would be like and after yesterdays test ride all my concern were answered. So here it is. I got my hands on a 2014 sliverado double cab the 6.2l motor with a 6.6 ft box and 3.42 gears. For the fuel mileage test I wanted to see the difference between my wife's truck with the 5.3l vs the sliverado with the 6.2. For this test I took the wife's truck and set the cruise control at 100 km/h and reset the DIC and set it on the MPG screen. I left the dealership and travelled down a four lane

highway for 7kms took the off ramp and then travelled back to the dealership. Total trip distance was 14kms. The mpg on the wife's truck read 23mpg. The same trip was done with the 6.2l and it read 21mpg. These are Canadian figures. I was sure impressed with these numbers.

Now for my favorite test. I watched the video the was posted on YouTube where TFL or a The Fast Lane did a 0 to 60mph test on the silverado High Country. I think the results were in the high sevens. When I tested the 2014 6.2l Silverado I put the vehicle in 4wd to prevent wheel spin and turned off the traction control I got 0 to 60mph in just under 6.5 seconds, WOW. THAT IS QUICK. I even recorded it with my camera just for recording keeping purposes. For reference the wife truck does it in 8 seconds. And for more reference I have tested and video taped several other pickup trucks for a 0 to 60mph runs. I didn't do any mpg tests. All trucks were crew cab

configuration. 2012 GMC Denali 6.2l 0-60 7 second, 2012 ford Eco boost 7.1 seconds, 2013 Toyota tundra with the 5.7l and the dodge ram with Hemi were both around 7.2 seconds. Oh and my 2008 Duramax with big hp mods does 0-60mph in a 5.5 seconds. Thanks for reading.

The Eco boost needs a boosted launch ie foot on brake to build the boost to achieve those 0-60 in the low 7s. So I could see where the gas gm would whoop the Eco boost. I have also tested the a 2014 crew cab 5.3l with the 3.42 gears and it does 0-60 in 7.5 seconds. Also a 2014 reg cab short box 5.3 with 3.42 gears does it in 7 seconds. Bye bye ecoboost.

Making me wish I waited for the 6.2 GMC AT instead of jumping on the 5.3... :)

Or better yet wait a yr or two and get the 6.2 with an 8 speed.....

My 2011 with 6.2 and 3.42 gets around 13.5 mpg on winter gas and 14.5 in summer. I never sniff 21 mpg. I would bet your expectations too high. Fun truck to drive though...

Boombastic, where are you at in Canada? If in Ontario where did you test drive this truck? I cannot find any 6.2's in my area. Like bogeypro I get about 13-14 US MPG in the winter, but in summer 18-20 US MPG is possible with steady highway driving even at 120 km/h.

Could you link the video of the 6.2 vs Ecoboost video? I searched and couldn't find it. Maybe I'm just over looking it. I was a little disappointed by the TFL Ike Gauntlet challenge. The truck's tranny mapping made it really struggle up the hill where the Ecoboost would hold a gear at 5000 rpm and just scream up the hill. The Silverado kept shifting up and hanging around 3000 rpm where it would lose a bunch of speed and then jump back to 5000 rpm or so and scream up to 65 or 70. That's nothing against the engine, it was plenty powerful to pull the load and TFL refused to use the manual gear select mode, but still.... No doubt the new 6.2 is the kind of the hill at the moment, though.

It sounds like solely a programming problem. The manual specifically states "The vehicle has a shift stabilization feature that adjusts the transmission shifting to the current driving conditions in order to reduce rapid upshifts and downshifts. This shift stabilization feature is designed to determine, before making an upshift, if the engine is able to maintain vehicle speed by analyzing things such as vehicle speed, throttle position, and vehicle load. If the shift stabilization feature determines that a current vehicle speed cannot be maintained, the transmission does not upshift and instead holds the current gear."

The 6.2 clearly has plenty of power; this observed deficiency should be easily correctable with a future firmware update.

Or simply putting it in manual mode and selecting the correct gear yourself. GM put those buttons there to be used....

With the DI 6.2 being a clean sheet design, I think the 21mpg is possible and or might even be able to be exceeded. The new EPA mileage testing procedure it pretty tough.
